Hello!

Welcome (virtually) to the first ever Mounds Park Academy Figure It Out, Bout!

In a year that has brought many uncertainties, we are all seeking to return to “the before times”. Stay tuned for our theme release video, which will be a blast from the past!

Many coaches, judges, and students alike, are stepping into this season with little experience in online tournaments. This is opportunity to get acclimated to synchronous tournaments via NSDA Campus, and to help prepare you for a virtual season.

We can all agree that a huge portion of what makes Speech, “Speech”, is the in-person experience a tournament offers. That’s why we are designing this tournament a little bit differently. Links will be sent out in January, offering virtual rooms for:

-Coaches, tab, and tech support

-A common room, where finals postings will be “dropped”, and awards will be held.

-Unique links for each team to have a team meeting room.

-Judges Lounge

The tournament schedule is as follows:

8:00AM - Confirm Entries in Speechwire (will be live scheduling)

8:30AM - Draw Meeting in Draw Zoom Room

8:45AM - Judges Meeting

8:45AM - Draw Round 1

9:00AM - Tech Check Round 1. All judges and students should check into their rooms and check audio/visual.

9:15AM - Round 1

10:15AM - Draw Round 2

10:40AM - Tech Check Round 2

10:45AM - Round 2

Noon - Draw Round 3

12:25PM - Tech Check Round 3

12:30PM - Round 3

2:30PM - Finals (Draws will begin when postings are ready)

4:30PM - Awards Livestreamed

Event/Entry Logistics

We are doing something new this year: INDIVIDUAL SWEEPSTAKES!!! This award will operate similar to Team Sweepstakes. Students will earn cumulative points based on their individual ranks. Individual Sweepstakes placing will be based on who has the highest accumulation of points throughout the day, with points earned in Double and Triple entries counting as well. Point accumulation is as follows:

Rank 1: 3 points

Rank 2: 2 points

Rank 3: 1 point

We will be offering all 13 MSHSL categories, including POI. Double entry is allowed, as is Triple Entry, but it is the student’s responsibility to ensure they make it to their round on time. Students may not triple enter if they are in draw categories or Discussion.

There will be Finals, and Honor Finals where entry numbers permit.

EX READING PROSE SELECTIONS: 0-10

EX READING POETRY SELECTIONS: All

STORYTELLING SELECTIONS: Stories 1-10

DISCUSSION TASKS: Topic One

We are also adding a unique twist to Extemp Finalists: Hypotheticals. The final rounds of Extemp will focus on a hypothetical situation, and all finalists will be presented with the same situation (with differences for International and Domestic areas). To maximize each student’s potential, internet access is allowable for the final round. An example of a hypothetical looks like this:

“You are the president-elect in 2021. Which country do you partner with to fast-track a COVID-19 vaccine with?”

“It is summer 2021 and the US Economy has crashed, and the only way to save it is to cut one federal department/agency. Which do you cut?”

E-Ballots

Since this tournament will be virtual, your judges and students will need accounts with NSDA Campus. All of the judges ballots will be E-Ballots, and all room assignments will be sent out in NSDA Campus’s portal. Information on registering your judges and students for NSDA Campus will be sent out in late December, so as to allow for any updates with the system to occur.
