3. In IPDA debate, students will be presented with 5 resolutions (2 policy/2 fact or value/1 metaphorical). TOPIC DRAW WILL BE IN YOUR VIRTUAL ROOM! STUDENTS SHOULD STRIKE AS SOON AS BOTH DEBATERS ARE THERE. THE JUDGE NEED NOT BE PRESENT!  The 30-minute preparation time will commence with the first negative topic strike. Both affirmative and negative debaters will alternatively strike topics until one resolution is left for the round. As per IPDA rules, students ARE allowed to access any materials, written or electronic, during prep. Students are also allowed to transcribe and use notes during the round. However, IPDA rules prohibit access to electronic materials during the debate round.

PLEASE NOTE: The New York/New Jersey State Tournament goes by Phi Rho Pi rules when it comes to coaching during IPDA prep. Therefore, students may prep with other students, but NOT with coaches!!!

4.  Awards will be presented to all elimination round participants, the top 3 schools, the top 3 community colleges, and top 3 individual speakers.

5.  The final round of Persuasive Speaking shall determine the 2 student representatives for the Interstate Oratorical Association contest. The top 2 students from New York and the top 2 students from New Jersey shall represent their respective states at IOA. The next two students from each state shall serve as the alternative representatives for that state. In the event that there are not enough representatives in the final round from New York or New Jersey, we will turn to ranks in prelims to determine the representatives.

6.  Students must be entered in at least 4 individual events to be eligible for speaker awards.

7.  For IE school sweeps, points will be awarded based on final round placement as follows: 6th place = 1 point; 5th place = 2 points; 4th place = 3 points; 3rd place = 4 points; 2nd place = 5 points; 1st place = 6 points

8. For IPDA school sweeps, each school’s top 3 debaters will be counted as follows: 5 points per win in prelims; 10 points for reaching semifinals; 15 points for reaching finals.

9. Schools must be entered in both IPDA and IE to be in overall sweeps.
