General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Indiana. View manager contact information Steve Kirkpatrick Memorial Speech Tournament Virtual Edition: November 20-21.
The Concord High School Speech Team invites you to our annual speech tournament, albeit in a different format than normal. We will offer all IHSFA speech events except for Discussion (Extemp Commentary will take its place) and follow IHSFA or NSDA rules where applicable, unless otherwise specified. Please make sure to read through all of the following information carefully. ALL TIMES LISTED ARE EDT.
General Information Video on uploading links to speechwire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQF6gKK9l6c&feature=youtu.be
Please note: My goal is to offer a free tournament. However, I may need to employ a team fee, depending on the number of entries we get. I will make every effort to keep that fee low but I do need to make sure I will be able to cover the cost of Speechwire. IF a team entry fee MUST be made I will most certainly make sure it is communicated BEFORE the tournament and will not expect that payment before the meet itself.
Entries: Varsity and Novice divisions with a maximum of 8 per event. You may determine how to divide your entry. Novice is defined as a first year student in speech. All others should be entered in varsity.
Judges: 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction (6 entries=2 judges).
Tournament Platform: In order to accommodate as many situations as possible, our tournament will be asynchronous. All entries will upload a link to a recorded version of a student’s speech. [Youtube links are preferred.]
*Please title each recording with the student's full name, event, and the title of their speech. Example #1: Joe Sample. Humor. Pillow Talk. Example #2: Beth Norman. IX. Will China become the new global leader?
It is the coach’s responsibility to ensure their students’ submissions are able to be watched. I will NOT be able to review every submission to ensure they are working links.
Recording: We will be following NSDA protocol for recording: “Submissions or recordings may not be edited using any software; all submissions must be non-stop footage of the entire performance done through the permitted submission platform. The camera being used must remain stationary throughout the entire performance, and no zooming or panning is permitted. Other individuals may be present while filming, but audience interaction (laughing, applause, etc.) must not be included in the performance.”
NOTE: Please keep in mind that every school and student is operating under different circumstances. Judges should be instructed NOT to consider background and/or technical issues as part of the judging criteria. Focus should be on the student’s performance.
Events:
Video #1: Students should prepare a 5 minute Newscast to include a music intro/outro of their choosing and a 1 minute commercial advertising a product associated with Thanksgiving. Video #2: Students should prepare a 2 minute editorial on the topic of community responsibility.
A list of topics will be released on Sunday, November 15. Students will select one topic area and prepare a 5 minute speech addressing the selected topic. Students are seated at a desk when presenting. Please refer to the NSDA website for specific rules and examples. Awards: Top 2 finishers in each event division will earn sweeps for your team. Ribbons to the top 8 in each event. Top teams will be recognized but no hardware will be given.
Deadline: Registration is due Tuesday, November 17 by 5pm EST. All judges must be entered and video links must be uploaded by Wednesday, November 18th at 6:00pm EST, no exceptions.
