Speech for Success - Women’s Words Matter Virtual Speech Meet

The Gold Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouts. After attending the 2019 NSDA Nationals in Dallas and seeing a lack of girls in many categories and overwhelming male dominance in others, I decided to focus on encouraging females to learn the power of public speaking. This is an all-girl* Novice and Varsity meet. 

All Girl Scouts (students, judges, coaches) will be honored at the event.

SPEECH

Here are the particulars. (We made a schedule change by tightening up the day a bit to give everyone more free time on their Saturday).

 

 

This is an all-girl* Novice and Varsity Virtual meet, for Indiana High Schools.

The goal of this meet is to encourage girls to learn from and lift up each other in speech.

*Should a Duo Interpretation team or Original Performance team be mixed gender, a male competitor may participate as a double or triple entry in other individual events

Should that duo drop from Duo Interpretation or Original Performance, the male competitor is scratched from their remaining entries and all rounds.

Any gender-neutral or gender nonconforming competitors are welcome and encouraged to join (please inform us of your pronouns).

 

Contestants can double enter. 

Varsity contestants can triple in any three events. 

NO tripling Novices. 

 

There will be separate Novice and Varsity competitions. Novice is for any competitor with less than 50 NSDA points.  

 

We will be offering the following Speech events in a virtual asynchronous format.

•Dramatic Interpretation •Duo Interpretation* •Humorous Interpretation

•Informative Speaking •Original Oratory  •Original Performance*

•Poetry      •Program of Oral Interpretation (POI)      •Prose

 

 

Judges: Please provide 1 judge for every 4 contestants. But feel free to commit more. The more judges we have the better off we are.

 

All other IHSFA/NSDA rules apply

Therefore per NSDA rules, every competitor in a timed event is granted a 30-second grace period

We will offer 3 straight rounds of competition. 

Despite the virtual format, we will be giving out sweepstakes trophies, and will announce sweepstakes points during the awards ceremony.

Sweepstakes points are as follows:

1st=6pts, 2nd=5pts, 3rd=4pts, 4th=3pts, 5th=2pts.

 

We intend to use electronic balloting at this tournament. 

 

Top six in each division of each event will be awarded a ribbon

As a Girl Scout Gold Award, I am expected to come up with a budget and fundraise. Because of that, there is no entry fee for competitors, however there is a required one-time, non-refundable $5 mailing fee for the team/school that must be paid with the team's initial entry. This will pay for shipping on the ribbons and trophies possibly earned.
