Friends and Colleagues:

The University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University and Governors State University are pleased to invite you to the Chicago Swing on October 17th and 18th, 2020 hosted VIRTUALLY. Our teams are proud to host a HYBRID Swing Weekend of competition. Saturday will be synchronous and Sunday asynchronous.

We are pleased to offer all 11 AFA Events. A novice division will be offered for any events with sufficient entries. Novice is defined for this tournament as a competitor in their first two years of competition. Awards will be presented to the top six speakers in each event, top five speakers in individual sweepstakes, and the top five schools in team sweepstakes. We will also offer a combined swing sweepstakes awards for the top 3 schools and individuals.

Please enter the tournament by using speechwire.com before 5pm on Tuesday October 13th, 2020.
One judge will be required for every six entries. Schools must cover 50% of their entry. School fee $25 per half.
Fees are $8 per IE entry. Uncovered entries are each $10.
Drop fees will be assessed after 5pm on Wednesday, October 14th. 
Add/drops on Thursday, October 15: $15 per change plus entry fee
Drops on Friday, October 16 incur a $30 per drop plus entry fee Dropped judges are $50

NO ADDS ALLOWED ON FRIDAY, October 16
Drops on Saturday, October 17: $40 per drop plus original entry fee
Drops on Sunday, October 18: $50 per drop plus original entry fee
NO ADDS ALLOWED ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY!!!

These fees will apply each day as each day is a separate tournament. A final invoice including dropped fees will be shared the morning of each tournament.

Student run teams will not be charged for entries covered by judges. Any teams in need of entry fee discounts will be given support if we are asked for it.

Day 1 DOWNTOWN

October 17th, 2020 Synchronous Saturday

9:00am - Registration 9:30am – Extemp Draw

10:00am – Round 1A (EXT, PERS, DUO, PRO, POI, CA)

11:15am – Round 1B (IMP, ADS, INF, DI, POE)

12:30pm – Break Lunch On Your Own 1:15pm – Extemp Draw

1:45pm – Round 2A (EXT, PERS, DUO, PRO, POI, CA)

3:00pm – Round 2B (IMP, ADS, INF, DI, POE)

4:15pm – Extemp Draw for Finals

4:45pm – Finals A (EXT, PERS, DUO, PRO, POI, CA)

6:00pm – Finals B (IMP, ADS, INF, DI, POE)

(we will collapse finals if possible) 8:30pm – ASYNCHRONOUS AWARDS

 

Day 2 THE BURBS

October 18th, 2020 Asynchronous Sunday

The Chicago Swing will follow the AFA – NST standards for videos:

  • Students are only allowed use of one microphone and one speaker.
  • Duo partners are not allowed to perform in the same room for filming.
  • Physically present audiences (aside from the camera operator) are not allowed.

Judging for this tournament will begin at 10am.


9:35am Ballots released
10:00am – Round 1A
11:15am – Round 1B
12:30pm – Round 2A
1:45pm – Round 2B
3:30pm – FINALS A (collapsed if possible)
4:45pm – Finals B (if needed) 

The tournament will provide links for judging rounds to judges with their dance cards / eballots. We will also provide these links to other competitors in the round if they would like to observe. Due to privacy concerns, only judges and students participating in a specific round will have access to video links for that round. Please do not share these links with others out of respect for the performers’ privacy.

The same video will be used for all rounds: 2 preliminary rounds and finals.

 

Sweepstakes Points

   Individual Sweepstakes

All students will be entered in individual sweepstakes. Students will earn points toward individual sweepstakes for any entry reaching open or novice finals

Team Sweepstakes

Team sweepstakes will be awarded to the top five teams at the tournament each day based on final round points.

Individual and team sweepstakes points will be awarded as follows:

12 Points – 1st Place in open final

10 Points – 2nd Place in open final

8 Points – 3rd Place in open final

6 Points – 4th Place in open final

4 Points – 5th Place in open final

2 Points – 6th Place in open final

1 Point – Non-advancing Semifinalist

NOVICE FINALISTS WILL RECEIVE ½ the sweepstakes of the OPEN final placing (ie First place in the novice final will receive 6pts)

 

The scores from both Saturday and Sunday will be totaled in order to determine overall swing sweepstakes.

 

Awards:

NOTE THIS REPRESENTS CHANGES FOR THIS YEAR ONLY

We will present awards to the finalists in each individual event. Certificates will be provided to ALL finalists electronically. Champions will receive electronic gift cards along with their awards.

 

The top five speakers in individual sweepstakes will be recognized with a certificate and $25 for the champion, $20 for the runner up, $15 for 3rd Place, $10 for 4th place and $5 for 5th each day.

 

The top five schools in team sweepstakes (each half) will be recognized with an award mailed to their school.

 

We will also offer a combined swing sweepstakes (team and individual top 3) awards.

The overall swing individual champion will receive $50 dollars, runner up $40 and 3rd place

$30. The top 3 teams in overall swing sweeps will have a trophy mailed to their school.

 

**NOTE NOVICE DIVISION REQUIRES 6 or more entries** Designate each competitor as novice or varsity when registering. We will recognize TOP NOVICE if there is not a separate division.

Videos for the asynchronous half are due 5 pm, Tuesday, October 13

Fees Assessed: 5pm, Wednesday, October 14

All judges are expected to be available for final rounds. All judges are considered “clean” for final rounds.

 

Given the format for this years’ tournament, we are operating on an ‘honor’ system where we will share final invoices and will complete ALL necessary paperwork to receive a check from each team. If you need other payment arrangements, please let us know ASAP.
