Hello MAFL Friends!

I hope you will join us for MAFL #2 and MAFL #3 hosted synchronously on Zoom (with entries on Speechwire) on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2020. Although we will be competing virtually, we want to extend our sincerest thanks to the University of Northern Iowa for previously volunteering to host.

The Mid-America Forensic League is committed to inclusiveness and welcomes students and coaches from all identities and social roles. In light of ongoing harassment and discrimination, MAFL stands in solidarity with and will continue to offer a safe, educational space for our most vulnerable members. In this spirit, if you (students, coaches, or judges) encounter any issues that impede your ability to be mentally and physically well at the tournament, please seek out the MAFL Wellness Advocate. The MAFL Vice President, Sade Barfield, is serving as the 2020-2021 MAFL Wellness Advocate.

Special Notes for MAFL #2:

  • MAFL #2 will recognize the top novices in each event. Please designate your students as "Novice" or "Open" during registration. A novice is a student in their first year of college competition!
  • MAFL #2 is our Fall Charity Tournament. A donation will be made to a local charity of the host school's choosing.
  • MAFL Internship applications are due Tuesday, October 20 by 5:00 pm CDT. Check the MAFL Website (www.mafl.info) for the full internship description.

Entries: Each school may enter 6 students per event. Each student may enter up to 4 events. Because of the 1 hour and 15-minute time limit for each round, it is strongly recommended that students are only double-entered and not triple-entered in a pattern. It is the responsibility of the student to make it to their rounds on time. Judges cannot wait past the time allotted for the round. Students may not enter all 4 events in one pattern.

*Entries are due on Speechwire by Tuesday, October 20 at 5:00 pm CDT. After this point, no new entries will be accepted, however, changes and drops may be made on the SpeechWire website until Wednesday, October 21 at 12:00 pm.*

Fees: Please remember that at the first MAFL you attend, you will be required to submit your yearly membership dues of $300.00. This payment entitles your school to attend all of the remaining 2020-2021 MAFLs. A non-member school may attend 1 MAFL weekend per season without paying membership dues, but instead, pay $8 per entered slot and uncovered judge fees.

Beyond your one-time membership dues, the only fees you will pay at each tournament are for uncovered or dropped slots. Each full-time judge covers 6 slots, and uncovered slots are $10 each. If you bring more than 20 uncovered slots, the fee will be increased to $20 for each slot beyond 20.

Payment: This year, MAFL will accept both checks and digital payments. For check payments, checks can be made out to “Mid America Forensic League” and mailed to the mailing address below. For digital payments, please reach out to Kevin Hill for more information (contact information is below).

Please do not hesitate to contact me (HillKA28@uww.edu or 630-624-6740) if you have any questions about MAFL tournaments or using SpeechWire.
