FOR NOW, HERE IS A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL INVITATION (My apologies if you did not receive one!):

Happy Holidays, everyone! You are cordially invited to attend the 16th Annual Grindstone Invitational (aka, "Grindstone XVI").

(And it's really an Open Tournament, but still, you're invited!)

WHEN:

Wednesday-Saturday, January 13-16 (Asynchronous IE Rounds 1-3 on W-F; LIVE/Synchronous Round 4/Hidden Power on Saturday)

WHERE:
Online, OH (NSDA Campus + SpeechWire)

NOTE:
Please have IE videos entered by Tuesday evening (1/12) @6PM EST so that we can ensure their accessibility.

EVENTS:
We will run all nine traditional HS IE events along with PF, LD, 2P, and CD.  (Double-entries are allowed for IE.)  MS events will include: Public Forum; Extemporaneous Debate; Interpretation; Declamation; and [something else, but I have to look it up].  As of now we do not plan to offer Big Questions Debate at either level, due to lack of participation thus far.  The plan is to run four rounds of IE (with R4/HP on Saturday), LD, and PF; 2P will run three rounds.  NOTE: In order to optimize IE judge availability on Saturday, we may adjust the scheduling for MS IE events, which may include going completely asynchronous, and/or having three rounds; I will notify you ASAP once this determination is finalized.

HS Congressional Debate will use the January 16, 2021 legislation (from the OSDA web site).

MS-CD will use (from the OSDA/MSCD 2020-21 docket) legislation numbers:
03 (A Bill to Register 18-year-olds to Vote);
06 (A Bill to Create Nuclear Waste Storage Sites in Yucca Mountain);
08 (A Resolution to Condemn Chinese Aggression in the South China Sea);
11 (A Resolution to Amend the Constitution to Impose Congressional Term Limits); and
12 (A Bill to Tax Labor Automation to Secure the Workforce).

REGISTRATION:
I'll plan to "print" invoices on Thursday evening (1/14) at approximately 7 PM.  You will be able to make drops until Saturday-morning registration begins.  As per usual, the Live registration will involve the Cleveland District OSDA Zoom, which I will link to the "General Information" page as we get closer to the tournament.  The time for registration will be 7:45-8:30 AM EST on Saturday 1/16.  We will try to start Saturday rounds as close as possible to 9 AM.  When I figure out how exactly I'll present awards, I'll post that information, as well.  (I likely will send emails via SpeechWire, too.)

TOPICS: Congressional Debate will use legislation for January 16, 2021.  PF and LD will use Jan/Feb topics.  2P will use the 2020-21 topic.

  • LD: Resolved: States ought to ban lethal autonomous weapons.
  • PF: Resolved: The National Security Agency should end its surveillance of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.
  • 2P: Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.

FEES/PAYMENT:
Make checks payable (and direct them) to: Cleveland District OSDA, c/o Carrie Cofer, 4470 Angela Dr., Fairview Park, OH, 44126.

Each entry is $5, or $10 for PF, MS-PF, and Duo.

IN CLOSING:
We know you have many options when choosing a tournament, so we thank you for flying with us this year.  More specific information will be posted to the General Info section of the SW tournament page (and emailed to you) as we get closer to the tourney/as per necessary.  (I promise not to inundate your email inbox with daily updates from now till then.)  As always, please ensure that you can "bring" enough judges to cover--both as a general principle, but also as we will try to run 3-judge panels for the IE hidden-power rounds on Saturday.  (Feel free to make that your New Year's Resolution!)  If you can bring more judges than you need, oh, bless you.

Thank you and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
