We are so excited to invite you to the McNicol Middle School “Hawk Flights” Debate Tournament on October 3, 2020.  Our school, team, and parents are excited to host all of you. We are hard at work to provide you with an amazing experience.  
 
Registration on SpeechWire will be open until 12pm on Thursday, October 1st.
 
Events: We will offer outstanding competition in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Policy Debate, Congress, Original Oratory, Informational Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu, Poetry, and Prose.
 
The top 6 of each event will be recognized at the awards ceremony after Round 4.
 
Rounds: There will be 4 rounds of competition across Speech and Debate. Congress will have 2 sessions and then a Final.
 
Judges: You will need you to make sure to provide 1 judge for every 5 IE entries (including Congress) and 1 judge for every 3 debate entries, or any fraction thereof.
 
Entry fee: $2.00 per competitor
 
All competitors should be READY TO BEGIN by 8:00am. Rounds will begin at 8:30am SHARP. They will need to be logged in to both their SpeechWire account (set up by their coach), and Zoom (their Zoom login email should match the email address used for their SpeechWire account). The steps for creating the student SpeechWire accounts (by the coach) are:
  • FOR NEW STUDENTS (not yet on the roster)
    • Log in at www.speechwire.com/login
    • Click Team roster
    • Use the fields at the top of the page to add students.
    • If an email address is included, then the student will immediately receive an email with an activation link to activate their account.
  • FOR EXISTING STUDENTS (already on the roster)
    • Log in at www.speechwire.com/login
    • Click Team roster
    • Click the student you want to send an activation email to
    • Use the email field to add their email address, and when that is saved, the student will immediately receive an email with an activation link to activate their account.
 
For PF, the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should enact the Medicare-For-All Act of 2019.
 
For LD, the NOVICE topic will be used - Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.
 
For Policy Debate, the 2020-21 topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing. In addition, all teams MUST use the Novice Policy Packet. The Novice Policy Packet can be accessed at http://www.debatecoaches.org/2018-2019-novice-packet
 
Extemp topic areas will be "the International Economy", "COVID-19", "South America", and "the US Presidential Election".
 
Impromptu topic areas will be "Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice", "the Notorious RBG", "Fear", and "Choice".
 
Congress will use the October MAST Legislation. If a chamber finishes debating all 4 pieces of legislation, they will move on to the November MAST legislation. Congress legislation for the fall semester was emailed to all coaches. It is also accessible electronically here under the "Files for Download" section. The fall legislation packet has designations for which bills will be debated in which months, with 4 bills per month.
