This is a High School tournament in Florida.

You are cordially invited to CFCDI #4 to be held on-line Saturday, January 30, 2021. This is a 3 round tournament from 9AM-2PM.

We offer middle school, novice and varsity competition for all Florida schools regardless of whether you are a participating program in the Florida Civics & Debate Initiative. There is no fee to join our league and our entry fees are low.

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE WEDNESDAY, Jan. 27 AT MIDNIGHT.

EVENTS and DIVISIONS: If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Best Middle School Award in addition to the usual awards.

LIVE EVENTS INCLUDE:

  • Lincoln Douglas Debate-We will be using the Jan/Feb 2021 topic: Resolved: States ought to ban lethal autonomous weapons.
  • Public Forum Debate-We will be using the Feb 2021 topic: Resolved: On balance, the benefits of urbanization in West Africa outweigh the harms.
  • World Schools Debate-There will be one open division of World Schools Debate. Hybrid team from different schools are NOT allowed. We will hold 2 rounds using the NSDA Dec 2020 Prepared Motions:         
    • Rd 1-This House would cancel African debt.
    • Rd 2-This House would ban high-stakes testing for students impacted by the pandemic.
  • Congressional Debate- Two(2)  one and a half hour (1.5 hr) sessions. Legislation is due by Tuesday. Jan 12 to apryl.taylor@osceolaschools.net. A legislation packet will be found in the Files to Download tab.
  • Mixed Extemporaneous Speaking*-Topic areas will focus on diversity and inclusion. Rds 1 and 3 will be domestic issues. Rd 2 will be international issues.

ASYNCHRONOUS (PRE-RECORDED) EVENTS INCLUDE:

  • Declamation*
  • Dramatic Performance*
  • Duo Interpretation*
  • Informative Speaking
  • Oral Interpretation of Literature* (Rd 1 poetry/Rd 2 round prose/Rd 3 poetry) Be sure to upload poetry recordings in the first and third boxes and prose in the second box.
  • Original Oratory*
  • Program Oral Interpretation

*Denotes events which will use CFL rules. All other events will use NSDA rules.

Instructions on how to upload speech/inter videos can be found on the “Files for Download” page. Videos must be uploaded by midnight, Wednesday, Jan, 27, 2021. Please review the expectations for Pre-recorded events document in this tab as well.

JUDGES: Adults, coaches, and qualified varsities with at least 75 NSDA points may judge the middle school and novice divisions. ADULTS ONLY MAY JUDGE THE VARSITY DIVISIONS. Judges need to be trained. They may take the NSDA judge training course if they did not attend any judge training. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.
