September 1, 2020
Dear Valley Forensics League Community,
As the 2020-21 forensics season presents us with new challenges the Valley Forensics League Executive committee wants to play a role to ensure accessibility of tournaments for our member schools.
We are hosting an invitational on Saturday, October 3rd for all schools that have been members in the last five seasons. Non-member schools can request to participate in the tournament. Non-member schools will be placed in a waitlist to ensure accommodations are made for our member schools. If additional accommodations are available, schools can be admitted to the tournament as long as there is capacity remaining.
Tournament Goals Our goal for hosting this invitational is to provide a welcoming and accessible tournament environment that mimics our previous in-person league tournaments. Our aim is to provide a competitive space that allows students to become comfortable and more familiar with competing in a virtual setting. Given this, our aim is to start small with our first invitational this season and then be able to gain virtual tournament management skills.
Tournament Format Our invitational will offer the 11 individual events offered by the AFA NST and will follow AFA-NST guidelines for events, which includes new rules for DUO interpretation. The tournament will offer a single flight of events with two preliminary rounds and finals in synchronous delivery.
Schedule: Saturday, October 3 9:30 am: Welcoming Assembly/Call 9:45 am: Extemp Draw 10:00 am: Round 1(all events, students may be TE) 11:15 am: Extemp Draw 11: 30 am: Round 2 1:00 pm: lunch break 2:00 pm: Finals 4:00 pm or sooner Awards
Fees The VFL will offer four tournaments this season and membership dues will be $125 per school, which covers all entries for the season. League dues will need to be paid ASAP. Under covered judge fees will be $15/uncovered entry. 1 judge covers 7 entries.
Fees will be assessed the Wednesday prior to the tournament. Schools may mail payment to VFL ℅ Andrea Carlile SDSU -Box 2218 Brookings, SD 57007
Alternative Payment The VFL aims to have alternative forms of payment available prior to October 1, 2020. With the hope, schools can provide digital payment.
Judges The VFL committee strongly encourages schools to cover their entries. One judge covers 7 individual events. Each uncovered entry will be assessed a $15 fee. Judges will need access to the internet and a webcam.
Entries Entries should be submitted through SpeechWire.Com. The deadline for entries is Monday, September 28 at 9:00 pm central. No late entries allowed. The VFL committee will be using a virtual tournament platform in addition to SpeechWire.Com. Details will be shared on which platform ASAP.
Awards Competitors in final rounds and the top 3 schools in team sweepstakes will receive e-certificates, which will be emailed following the competition.
We thank you for your commitment to bringing accessible, affordable, and effective speech to the upper midwest.
