Coaches--- The Fishers Speech and Debate Team would like to invite you to compete in our first ever virtual tournament! The tournament will take place on Saturday, November 7th, and will be run using NSDA Campus through Speechwire. We will run a full slate of IHSFA Speech and Debate events, with some modifications to accommodate the virtual format. We also hope to use the virtual format to explore some new ways to run a meet. Here are the specifics:

  • We will offer both Speech and Debate competition and will format the tournament in such a way that students will be able to compete in both. We will run speech rounds at 8 AM, 9:30 AM, 11 AM, and 12:30 PM; with debate rounds running at 2 PM, 3:30 PM, 5 PM, and 6:30 PM. All events will be live/synchronous. Awards will be posted as a series of asynchronous videos as soon as possible after the meet has concluded.
  • This will be four straight rounds of competition with no elimination rounds. Debate will be power-matched High/High in rounds 3 and 4. Placing for the tournament will reflect teams’ combined speech and debate scores.
  • Student can double across any two speech events except Discussion and could potentially triple by competing in a debate event in the afternoon. Students cannot double in debate.
  • We will ask you to supply one judge for every five contestants or fraction thereof. Since you can mark your judge as either a speech or debate judge, you can tell them that they are either judging from 8 AM to 2 PM or from 2 PM to 8 PM.
  • Please do your best to line up your judges with the ratio of entries you have between speech and debate. If you mark as judge as “All” on Speechwire, they would count as two judges since they would be committed to judging up to 4 speech rounds and up to 4 debate rounds.
  • Since we are not running concessions at this tournament, we will be charging an entry fee of $1 per speech entry and $3 per debate entries. Our goal there is to cover the cost of using NSDA Campus. Our program will be covering the cost of Speechwire. If the entry fee makes participating in this tournament cost prohibitive, please communicate with me about that. We want to support this activity in Indiana and encourage many programs to compete, but our own fundraising has been severely curtailed by the pandemic.
  • Please have all entries on Speechwire by the morning of November 4th, at which point I will close registration and run final invoices. Please mail your check made out to Fishers Speech Team to Fishers High School, 13000 Promise Road, Fishers, IN 46038
  • We do not plan on distributing awards at this meet. The price  of ribbons and trophies alone, without factoring in the cost of shipping them and the logistical challenges of organizing them, would make this cost prohibitive. We will post our award ceremony as a series of separate videos for each event. Coaches and individual students can than share as needed to publicize their achievement. I am open to suggestions on other ways to recognize our competitors’ successes. Please make sure to input phonetic pronunciations for your students’ names into Speechwire to make these videos as correct as possible.
  • We do not expect to make too many modifications to existing IHSFA rules to run this tournament online, with one exception--- WSD will not run any impromptu rounds since prep time would make our AM/PM split unmanageable. We will run two prepared motions--- look for those to be posted to Speechwire prior to 10/15
  • Congress will use the November/December IHSFA docket. Competitors should prepare to debate bills 1 and 2 in the first session, 3 and 4 in the second session
  • Radio will compete Rd 1 News Program, Rd 2 Editorial, Rd 3 OTS (stay tuned for updates on how that will function on Campus), Rd 4 News Program
  • Extemp will draw for Rounds 1 and 3. Stay tuned for updates on how that will function on Campus.
  • Impromptu will function according to the standard IHSFA 7 minute block. Students will be given their topic in their virtual competition room the same as at a typical meet.
  • I will be using the Speechwire site for this tournament to push out materials on how this virtual tournament will function. Please stay tuned to those updates and communicate to your judges and competitors what they need to do in advance to make sure they are connected to you Speechwire account and ready to compete on NSDA Campus.

This is obviously a first for us and for most schools that will be competing. Let me know what I’m forgetting/overlooking/etc. Looking forward to ‘seeing’ everyone in November!
