Munster High School Debate Tournament

 

Munster Debate invites you to attend our 2020 Debate Tournament on Saturday, November 14.  Please read the information below.  

 

Online registration is available on Speechwire.  If you have any questions please email Jessica Hilbrich at jessmhilbrich@gmail.com and/ Mike Buck at mpbuck@munster.us. Steve Kennedy can also be reached at kennedystevenp805@gmail.com, but we recommend going through Jessica and Mike first. Please avoid using the contact information for Jordan Mayer as it will take more time to hand off the messages.

 

Our tournament this year will be virtual, so please make sure you read all instructions on how to register and compete/judge during the day.

To contact Tab during the tournament, please use the email munsterdebatetournament@gmail.com - this will be the FASTEST way to reach us. Everyone should use this email including coaches, judges, and students. You can also come to our virtual tab room, information listed below.


Virtual Registration

8:00-8:30am (CST)

Head Coach enters the Virtual Tournament office and checks in

First Round
8:45am (CST)--All judges/students should enter their first competition room.
9:00am (CST)--Round 1 begins.
Awards To be determined.
Notes Policy, LD, PF, WSD, and Congress will be offered and will follow IHSFA rules.
Policy
  • 2 divisions offered:  Varsity and Novice. IHSFA rules apply. 
  • For Novice Policy, novice restrictions apply: No topicality, counterplans or Kritiks.  Novice Affirmatives must run mandatory minimum sentencing; drug reform: facial recognition, or noncooperation with immigration enforcement
  • Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.
Lincoln-Douglas
  • Varsity and Novice offered.  
  • Both divisions will use the November/December topic. IHSFA Rules Apply.
  • Resolved: The United States ought to provide a federal jobs guarantee.
Public Forum
  • Varsity and Novice offered.
  • Both Divisions will use the November/December topic.
  • Resolved: The United States should adopt a declaratory nuclear policy of no first use.
World Schools Debate
  • One Division will be offered.
  • Teams will debate both sides of the prepared motion:
  • Rounds 1 & 3:  This House would end subsidies for commercial agri business.  This will be the one prepared topic. Debaters are to debate both sides.  
  • Rounds 2 & 4: Impromptu.
 
Congress
  • Varsity and Novice offered.  
  • Legislation to be debated is:  
  • Morning Session:  A Bill to Prohibit Paid Political Advertisements, A Bill to Create a National Firearms Registry
  • Afternoon Session:  A Resolution to Remove Sanctions Against North Korea, A Resolution to Allocate Funding to the United States Postal Service
  • Varsity chamber(s) will set the specific order of the day for each session, morning and afternoon.  Novice chamber will debate the bills in the order presented.
  • Varsity will elect presiding officers from within the house with competitors voting for best P.O.  
  • Please email us directly if you have someone willing to PO a novice house.  
 
Judges
  • Please bring one judge for every 4 debaters or fraction thereof (3 PF teams=2 judges). Congress=1 judge per 5 entries/fraction.
  • All judges should be ready to judge any event.
  • Varsity debaters with 250 NFL points+ may judge novice (PLEASE make sure to mark them as such on their registration.)
  • We will be using online balloting via Speechwire and NSDA Campus as the online platform, so please make sure you accurately enter your judges’ emails when registering on Speechwire. 
General We will have some breaks from the computer screen. 
Awards We will have ribbons to mail out the week after the tournament.
