Welcome to the Wakefield Warmup! I hope you and your debaters are ready for an incredible VIRTUAL competitive experience on Saturday, September 26th, 2020! (Please note the date change from the original September 19th)
 
This is a Middle School AND High School Virtual Debate Tournament.
 
Please follow the instructions on this page to register your entries. Each school may only initially enter SIX students in each division of all events. 
 
Registration for NEW ENTRIES will close on TUESDAY, September 22nd at 5pm. At that time as many students will be released from the waitlist as judge numbers allow. Changes (drops or name changes) can be made until 5pm on Friday, September 25th. Any changes after that, please text Justin Weaver: 954.790.8160 the school name, student who is dropping, and her/his event. 
 
All competitors should be READY TO BEGIN by 8:00am. Rounds will begin at 8:30am SHARP. They will need to be logged in to both their SpeechWire account (set up by their coach), and Zoom (their Zoom login email should match the email address used for their SpeechWire account). The steps for creating the student SpeechWire accounts (by the coach) are:
  • FOR NEW STUDENTS (not yet on the roster)
    • Log in at www.speechwire.com/login
    • Click Team roster
    • Use the fields at the top of the page to add students.
    • If an email address is included, then the student will immediately receive an email with an activation link to activate their account.
 
  • FOR EXISTING STUDENTS (already on the roster)
    • Log in at www.speechwire.com/login
    • Click Team roster
    • Click the student you want to send an activation email to
    • Use the email field to add their email address, and when that is saved, the student will immediately receive an email with an activation link to activate their account.
 
For PF, the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should enact the Medicare-For-All Act of 2019.
 
For the MIDDLE SCHOOL and NOVICE divisions of LD, the NOVICE topic will be used - Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.
 
For the VARSITY division of LD, the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER topic will be used - Resolved: In a democracy, voting ought to be compulsory.
 
For Policy Debate, the 2020-21 topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing. In addition, in the MIDDLE SCHOOL and NOVICE divisions all teams MUST use the Novice Policy Packet. The Novice Policy Packet can be accessed at http://www.debatecoaches.org/2018-2019-novice-packet
 
Extemp topic areas will be "Civil Rights", "COVID-19", "the Economy", "Africa", and "US Politics".
 
Impromptu topic areas will be "New Beginnings", "Movie Quotations", "the Virtual World", "Freedom", and "Autumn".
 
Congress legislation has been emailed to coaches and is accessible electronically here under the "Files for Download" section.
