Welcome to the registration site for the CHSAA Colorado Speech and Debate State Championship Tournament!

Many thanks to Rhonda Blanford-Green, Bethany Brookens, Sandra Williamson, and the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) for their continued support of speech and debate activities in the state of Colorado!

Tournament Information

Tournament Date: March 20-21, 2020

Location: Cherokee Trail  High School, 25901 E. Arapahoe Rd., Aurora, CO 80016 

Qualification: Students qualify to compete at the Colorado State Tournament based on their performance at the regional qualifying tournaments.  Up to two(2) students may be entered in congressional debate provided the school competed at the regional tournament.  Students may participate in only one event at the State tournament.

Schedule:  We will use the same schedule as last year updated to include congress.  It has been posted on the "files for download" on this website and at  http://www2.chsaa.org/activities/speech/pdf/2020_State_Schedule.pdf

Registration: Registration must be completed at www.speechwire.com by March 9, 2020. Late, missing, or incomplete registrations will result in a $25 late fee.  Registration will be live as soon as Regional directors  mark qualifying entries in Speechwire.   (For directors to do this, inside the Regional sites, go to Posting center, then Post results and qualify competitors.  Click Build tournament report.  This should pop up the advancing entries according to the quotas and allow Speechwire to import qualifers to the State Speechwire site.)

Registration Procedures:

  • Go to www.speechwire.com
  • Go to "Tournament Calendar"
  • Go to "CHSAA State Tournament" and click on the link.
  • Register your team by accepting your qualifiers to the State Tournament.
  • Please ensure that student names are listed as you would like them to be listed in the State Tournament Book and in any tournament results.
  • For the Interpretation of Literature events and POI, please update, if needed, the title and author information for each selection. Remember that competitors are required to bring a copy of the original source(s) to the tournament.
  • For Original Oratory and Informative Speaking, please update, if needed, the title of the speech and in parentheses identify the topic area. For example, "One Word" (Use of Language)
  • An Oratory/ Informative Cover Sheet and a typed manuscript of each qualifying oration and informative speech must be submitted to CHSAA on speechwire.com (or by mail or email) by March 9, 2020.

 

Extemp Topic Areas: The order of topic areas for the tournament will be drawn at registration on Friday morning and announced for all competitors.

CX Debate 2019-2020 Topic

     Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.

Lincoln Douglas Debate March-April 2020 Topic

     Resolved: Predictive policing is unjust.

Public Forum Debate March 2020 Topic

     Resolved:  The United States should increase its use of nuclear energy for commercial energy production.
