General information
This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a College tournament in Illinois. View manager contact information
Hello All,
It is my pleasure to invite you to the AFA District V Qualifier which will be held on Saturday, March 7, on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Thank you so much to Megan Koch and her staff for hosting! I encourage you to attend this tournament as either an AFA qualifier, an NFA qualifier, or as an excellent opportunity to see good competition and support the teams of District V! BOOK HOTELS ASAP
Please note that there are many changes regarding this year's AFA-NIET, and I am requesting your reply as soon as possible. Thank you in advance!
ENTRY DEADLINE:
Entries are due at 5:00 p.m., CST, Tuesday, March 3rd. Please enter using the Speechwire website. All fees will be assessed at noon on Wednesday, March 4th. Please remember that each school may enter up to five competitors in each of the eleven events.
ENTRY FEES:
In an effort to keep tournament costs to a minimum, each slot will cost $5.00. Each uncovered slot will cost $10.00 (to cover hired judge fees). Each judge covers 6 slots. Student drops after noon, Wednesday, March 4th will be $10.00. Judge drops will be $25.00. Student drops at registration will be $20.00 and judge drops will be $75.00.
PATTERNS:
Each student may enter up to two events per pattern.
A: Impromptu, Informative, Prose
B: Duo, Extemp, Persuasion, POI
C: Comm. Analysis, DI, After-Dinner, Poetry
IMPORTANT NOTE: Because the tournament has been condensed to one day, it will actually run with TWO patterns. We will condense the patterns listed above into two flights, attempting to minimize the number of quadruple-entered competitors.
E-BALLOTS: We will be utilizing Speechwire's E-ballot function. Please update your judges' info with an email for their e-ballot account, and make sure they bring an electronic device to use. There will be paper ballots available if needed.
REGISTRATION: Registration will be at Schroeder Hall room 130. All rounds will be in Schroeder.
I hope that you will be able to attend the District V Qualifier. Even if your team is not planning on attending the AFA-NIET, I encourage you to attend and support your colleagues. For those of you who are NFA-only, remember you can earn NFA qualifications at the District tournament. It can be a challenge to get enough schools for our District tournament, so I would encourage you to please make every effort to send students.
**Mandatory Title IX Training Information**
Schools, coaches, and judges can gain this training one of two ways.
1 Have school specific training from their personal institution
2 Take time to view the AFA-NIET Sexal Harassment Education Training 2020: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1V4B550l5yFzEah1vw0SLAN0xp3a7o7OtAo8vpudNYzU/edit?usp=sharing
When training is complete, either by the school or viewing the compiled AFA-NIET materials, make sure schools fill out this form:
https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxhZmFuaWV0bmV3MnxneDoxMGRlZTgxODE2ODM5ZDE1
PLEASE BRING THIS FORM TO THE DISTRICT TOURNAMENT (OR EMAIL JRSTANLEY@NOCTRL.EDU NO LATER THAN THURSDAY MARCH 5TH IF YOU WILL NOT ATTEND DISTRICTS).
If a school views the AFA-NIET Sexual Harassment Education training, they just need a Department Chair, Dean or other administrator to sign off that each student, coach, judge, etc. viewed the materials.
All students, judges and those helping at the AFA-NIET are required to have training. Please plan accordingly.
Also, you must submit your At-Large Qualification Leg Form, Student Verification Form, and any All-American nominations by the District tournament.
I sent an email with the much of this information including the AFA-NIET invitation, but please don't hesitate to let me know if you need something or have questions.
Additionally, Sonja Minnick at ISU had this message to share: “Students will have the opportunity to donate any awards (trophies, medals, plaques) distributed throughout the year during the tournament. There will a box located near tab as well as a box located in the student lounge, provided by Sonja Minnick from Illinois State University. She is collecting trophies to donate to All Awards in Madison, Wisconsin, where they are recycled and given to non-profits in need. Please bring any and all trophies to help out!”
Lastly, PLEASE EMAIL ME with answers to the following questions:
1. Do you plan to attend the March 7 District tournament (and the AFA-NIET)?
2. When is your team planning to arrive in Santa Ana? And how many seniors will you have? I am in the process of scheduling our District meeting at the AFA-NIET for Friday evening.
Hope to see you on March 7th in Normal (and don't forget ISU is hosting Last Chance on Sunday, and it counts for AFA legs)!
