Dear Forensics Colleague,

Papillion La Vista South High School cordially invites you to attend our Jr. Titan Speech Tournament for junior high students on Friday, May 1, 2020.  This tournament is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. We hope to see you there!   Please read over the invitation and e-mail me if you have any questions at lkhicks@paplv.org.

EVENTS: HI, DI, Poetry, Duet, Extemp, OO, Declamation, and Impromptu. **If any event has less than 7 entries, we will drop the event**.

ENTRIES & FEES: Students may DOUBLE enter at their own risk.  We will not hold rounds for cross entries. Extemp speakers will have a difficult time being double entered due to the time slots for that event.  We will limit entries to six per event to make sure we have room for all schools, but we will also have a waiting list to fill the building on a first come, first serve basis. We will do everything we can to let all on the waitlist in. The entry fee is $7 per event.  ENTRIES ARE DUE BY 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29th.

JUDGES: You must provide one adult, qualified judge for every 5 entries.  ANY ENTRY NOT ‘COVERED’ BY YOUR JUDGES WILL COST AN ADDITIONAL $25/ENTRY. Please make sure your judges are knowledgeable about all events offered at the tournament, and that they competent and mature enough to judge and provide quality feedback to the competitors, as there is only a brief judges meeting. Please try to cover with as many UNAFFILIATED judges as possible. If you have a very large entry, and a lot of affiliated judges, I may not be able to use all of your judges.

EVENTS INFO:

  • Extemporaneous:  Topics will cover both foreign and domestic issues from the news since March 2020.  Thirty-minute prep time. One 4X6 note card optional. Students must bring their own notecards. TIME LIMIT: MAX 5 MINUTES. We will not supply files/sources for students. WE WILL ALLOW THE USE OF COMPUTERS IN PREP – BUT YOU MAY NOT ACCESS THE INTERNET DURING PREP TIME.  So, you may file electronically and put the files on your computer, but your internet must be disabled during prep.
  • Original Oratory: Must be an original work of the student to inspire, persuade, and/or convince. You MAY run an INFORMATIVE speech here too. Limit of 150 quoted words.  Script is optional.  TIME LIMIT: MAX 8 MINUTES.
  • Impromptu:  Draw three topics, speak on one.  Five-minute prep time.  One 4x6 notecard optional. Students must bring their own notecards. TIME LIMIT: MAX 4 MINUTES.
  • Dramatic Interpretation:  A serious interpretation of an original cutting from prose or a play.  Script is optional.  TIME LIMIT: MAX 8 MINUTES.
  • Humorous Interpretation:  A humorous interpretation of an original cutting from prose or a play.  Script is optional.  TIME LIMIT: MAX 8 MINUTES.
  • Poetry:  A serious or humorous interpretation of one or more poems.  If more than one poem is used, they must be based on either a theme or a single author.  Script is required.  TIME LIMIT: MAX 8 MINUTES.
  • Duet Acting:  An original cutting from a humorous or serious play, acted out by two individuals.  Touching and use of a table and two chairs allowed.  Script is optional.  TIME LIMIT: MAX 10 MINUTES. PL South will NOT provide furniture for the performances.  Competitors must bring their own table and chairs.  And, these should be of a moderate size and a generic style (i.e. no bringing 'specialty' chairs, such as a rocking chair).
