Extemporaneous Info

EXTEMPORANEOUS INFORMATIVE -  Information

Welcome to the inaugural extemporaneous informative competition! Because we’re competing virtually, we are doing this experimental event in a slightly less than extemporaneous way for preliminary rounds, and then going entirely extemporaneous for the final. Below is more information!

The preliminary round theme for the 2021 tournament is: Something green inside your house or performance space. Your topic can be anything green. For example, if the round theme was “something red,” you might do an informative on strawberries, or red peppers, or the hundreds of Marshall Paw Patrol figurines in your basement (can you tell we have two little kids?). While there is no required structure for the speech, students should consider using regular informative structure to help with clarity. However, creativity is certainly allowed and encouraged, just as much as having fun is!

The final round theme for the 2021 tournament will be announced prior to finals, in order to keep the final round entirely extemporaneous.

Rules:

  1. Participants must perform alone.

  2. Extemp info should be 5 minutes in duration. While there is no limit to your prep time for preliminary rounds, there is a 30-minute prep time limit for the final.

  3. If you are also competing in regular info, you may not do the same topic for both, even if your regular topic fulfills the requirements of the extemp info preliminary round prompt

  4. A notecard is allowed for both the preliminary round and the final round

  5. Visual Aids, if used, may only be taken from inside your house/performance space or hand-drawn. No printing is allowed for extemporaneous info.

  6. On Thursday  (January 28th), competitors will submit one pre-recorded video/YouTube link that will be used for all 3 preliminary rounds. This speech will follow the preliminary round topic above (something green inside your house/performance space).

  7. Extemp info finalists will be announced on Saturday. Get ready. It’s going to be wild. And it will be livestreamed.

Preliminary Round Protocol: Remember that there is no prep time limit for the preliminary round video, since you’re submitting it ahead of time. You will submit one video, and the same video will be used for 3 different preliminary rounds.

Final Round Protocol: Finalists will be announced on Saturday. Students who qualify for the final round must appear in the designated digital room at the start of prep time for the final. If you are also entered in another event, allowances will obviously be made for that. The final round will be streamed live while students are waiting for awards to start.

Judging Criteria: Judges should evaluate this event in the same context they evaluate regular informative, except with the following stipulations: (1) understanding that prep time for the final round is limited, and prep time for preliminary rounds, while not limited, is likely to be fairly minimal given that students are likely preparing for other events as well; (2) creativity and fun should be rewarded, but the speech should still be informative in nature.
