WHSFA Open Virtual Speech Festival

Key Details

  • No prior qualification is required; this functions as an open contest.

  • Only individual/solo entries will be accepted; no group entries, nor two-person Demonstration speeches (due to social distancing). Each student may enter only one category. This is a great opportunity for students who participated in group categories earlier this season to try an individual/solo category.

  • Registration & Payment
  • All adjudicating (judging) will happen online with electronic ballots and comments. We ask that schools provide 1 judge for every 5 entries or fractions thereof. We prefer WHSFA certified adjudicators, or experienced WFCA judges. Parents entering students are not required to provide an adjudicator.

  • We will use WHSFA categories and rules, but will instruct adjudicators (judges) to make allowances for slight differences from WFCA.

  • Registration will open Wednesday, April 8 by 1pm. Each participating student must record a video of themselves on a mobile phone, tablet or computer, and upload that video to YouTube. Coaches or parents will register entries by providing a link to the unlisted YouTube video for each student. Entries will be due by 11:59pm, April 27.  Please review the Registration page for important details and be sure to include an email address for each judge registered. This will be followed by a window of about a week that we give adjudicators to evaluate presentations. We will release feedback and results by May 12.

  • Extemporaneous, Impromptu, and Radio will not truly be limited preparation categories in the traditional sense. On Saturday, April 25, 8am, we will post questions/prompts and news material for those categories, with an "honor system" expectation that students challenge themselves by limiting the amount of time they spend preparing, but we will not "police" this. This is about fostering a practice, educational experience.

  • Downloadable certificates commemorating participation and achievement will be available for each student following release of results. Coaches/parents may order (online) physical certificates for cost and shipping. No school awards will be given; nor will participation in this event affect the Three-Year Gold Award (formerly Four-Year Gold).

  • Students unable to participate this spring will have an opportunity to register to participate in a second online festival, once schools are in session again, and they have access to internet and a mobile recording device.
