Debate Information

In 2017 there was confusion about what was and was not allowed during parliamentary debate rounds. The following is a list of procedures that will be followed and rules violations may lead to disqualification. The hope is that this will help all teams be on the same page. These applies to parliamentary debate only and not Lincoln Douglas.

Parli topics will be developed by the Parliamentary Debate Resolution Committee over seen by the tournament director of Debate (William Murphy). Those topic areas will be made available one week prior to the tournament.

Topics will be announced 15 minutes prior to the round.

Internet access is permitted during prep as well as the use of printed research, however accessing the internet and the use of printed material of any form once the round begins is prohibited.

Electronic flowing and note taking is permitted but discouraged.

No material may be brought into the round that was prepared prior to the start of prep, and accessing the internet or any form of pre-prepared material during the round is grounds for immediate disqualification.

Pre-prepared material may include but is not limited to: Pre-written argument blocks, printed topicality shells, and research material. The expectation is that students do all their preparation during the 15 minute prep period.

Judges are permitted to request to see student material and notes to assure these standards are adhered too.

Exceptions can be made as necessary to accomodate student needs, however such requests should be made to the FIFA President (Jonathan Conway) prior to the tournament.

If a team believes a rule has been violated but the judge does not act upon it a complaint may be filed to the Director of Debate (William Murphy).

Specific sanctions shall be at the discretion of the Tournament Director of Debate and FIFA President.
