Covid Prevention & Awareness

We ask all participating students and schools to read and abide by the CDC recommendations for travel, which are included at the following website:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-during-covid19.html

We realize that the Omicron variant brings with it an added need to follow safety protocols. We ask everyone participating in the contest to add a heightened awareness of CDC recommendations, along with the following:

HFO 2022 is undertaking the following COVID-19 prevention measures:

  • Participating schools are strongly discouraged from bringing students displaying symptoms of the flu or COVID-19 to campus. Participating schools will be asked to remove students displaying flu or COVID-19 symptoms from competition areas/spaces. On the day of the tournament, should a student need to withdraw due to Covid symptoms or a positive test, we will NOT charge additional nuisance fees! We will adjust the tournament sectioning as necessary.
  • Masks will be available on-site to those who need them. The tournament will also do its best to provide ample sanitizing products to reduce germ spread.
  • Wearing of masks is strongly encouraged at all times, with exceptions for those who are actively eating. We will occupy classroom spaces across the BU campus. There will be ample room for students to prepare for their competitions while maintaining social distancing.
  • Spectators in elimination rounds should be limited to allow for appropriate social distancing in a classroom setting, and all audience members should be masked.
  • The state of Illinois requires masking in indoor spaces. This includes during performances. We also respectfully request that judges and audience members allow for appropriate distancing from the performance space (8-10 feet recommended).
  • We ask all judges and students to respect the in/out requests for students regardless of reason. Cross-entered students should be moved to the top of speaking orders per standard procedure. Students may depart after their performance for any reason, and may request to wait outside the performance room prior to their speaking order.
  • Each school will be assigned its own classroom space to serve as a "hub" for their team.

The following is an abridged version of the University of Texas COVID-19 policy:

  • Face masks are strongly recommended inside university buildings for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, except when alone in a private office or single-occupant cubicle.
  • For individuals who live with individuals who are immunocompromised, or who have a condition which places them at high risk for severe illness with COVID-19, masking and social distancing are strongly recommended, regardless of vaccination status, inside university buildings.
  • Wearing an N95/KN95 may be preferred in certain circumstances related to the working/learning environment and inherent health risks of the individual.
  • When you cannot wear a mask, (e.g., when eating at a dining hall) maintain social distancing.

When wearing a mask:

  • Make sure your recommended protective face mask covers your nose and mouth.
  • Take care when putting on and taking off your recommended protective face mask to avoid contamination of hands and face.
  • If you wear a cloth face mask, wash it frequently.
  • COVID-19 vaccination for all eligible individuals ages 12 and up is encouraged prior to any travel or attendance.
