Important Tournament Info

Our Statement on Implicit Bias:

We are all influenced by implicit bias, or the stereotypes that unconsciously affect our decisions. When judging, our implicit biases negatively impact traditionally marginalized and disenfranchised students. Before writing comments or making a decision, please take a moment to reflect on any biases that may impact your decision making. Please remember that the video quality of a student’s performance may be impacted by lighting, internet, access to equipment, or other family members’ presence in the home. To ensure a more equitable experience for our participants, please be sure your decision-making process and comments are related only to the content and quality of the presentation itself.

Virtual Tournament Etiquette:

Because we want to nurture good speakers and good people, please review this tournament etiquette guide.

Competitors - In general, the expectations are that students should behave and observe etiquette as if the tournament were in-person.  Specific recommendations are listed below.

  1. Arrive in the virtual room 10-15 minutes before scheduled start time to ensure technology is working correctly.

  2. Camera should be on, and the microphone should be muted except when doing “tech check” and performing speech.

  3. Once “tech check” is complete, students should wait quietly until the round begins.

  4. Students should follow any standardized naming convention required by the tournament.

  5. Double entered students arriving late should wait to be admitted to the competition room by the judge if a waiting room is in use.

  6. When performing, students using a script must hold the script in their hands.  Scripts/notes placed off camera are discouraged-students would not be able to do this in person.

  7. When performing, students should stand to perform as if they were in person.  Exception to this would be for Discussion rounds.

  8. Students should give consideration to the space they are performing in, ensuring that the background is not used to gain advantage or to distract the judge.  Background should be as neutral as possible, using a blank surface when possible.  Students should discuss options with coach and/or parents.

  9. If a student loses connection, they should try to re-connect as quickly as possible.  Students will then be given the opportunity to perform at the end of the round if tournament/time allows.  The goal of every tournament should be to have all students perform in a round in spite of technical difficulties but each tournament will make their own policies.

  10. Students are expected to be good audience members during others performances.  This includes:  camera on, microphone muted, camera on your face, no cell phone usage, no working on something off camera, clapping for fellow competitors (or other acceptable form of acknowledgement).

  11. Students should be given the opportunity to connect with fellow competitors in the round briefly at the end of the round either with mics unmuted or through the chat function.  This communication should adhere to school/tournament policies concerning harassment and all communication should be positive in nature.

  12. Students should not share any Livestream links they are given for a tournament!

  13. Recording (audio or video) or photographing competition rounds by any means (phone, PC, video camera, etc.) is considered inappropriate and subject to disciplinary action!

Judges - All judges are expected to follow common tournament etiquette rules as if the tournament was being held in person.  Specific recommendations are listed below.

  1. Judges should arrive in the virtual room 10-15 minutes prior to the start of the round to check technology for the round.

  2. Judges should follow any standardized naming conventions required by a tournament.

  3. Judges should have their camera on during the entire round.

  4. Judges should make sure they have good internet connection prior to the tournament.

  5. Judges should not base decisions on the quality of a student’s audio or video quality as not every student has the same equipment/internet.

  6. Judges should not base decisions on the background of the student’s performance space.  Judges should not comment on the setting/background on critique sheets.

  7. If the video platform provides a waiting room, judges should admit late/double entered students between speakers.

  8. Judges should submit ballots/scores ASAP after the completion of the round but no longer than 10 minutes after the round concludes.  Critique sheet comments can be completed after scores are submitted.

  9. Judges should be responsible for contacting the Tabroom with any technical issues during the round.  Please follow specific instructions for that tournament.

  10. Judges should allow a student to perform at the end of the round if their performance was interrupted by technical issues.  Follow procedures for the specific tournament.

  11. While in the virtual room, consider using a full screen option to better observe the performances.

  12. Judges should not share any Livestream links they are provided by a tournament.

  13. Recording (audio or video) or photographing competition rounds by any means (phone, PC, video camera, etc.) is considered inappropriate and subject to disciplinary action!

ANY protest concerns should be brought to the Tournament Directors in the Tab Room.
