2020 Iowa Swing Invitation

Greetings!

Simpson College and the University of Northern Iowa look forward to hosting you at the Iowa Swing! UNI will host the Bill Henderson Invitation (On the Simpson College campus) on Saturday, January 18, and Simpson will host the Storm Invitational Sunday, January 19.  Both tournaments will be held at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

The Iowa Swing offers competition in all 11 AFA events on both days and, in addition to IE’s, Public Forum debate will be offered on Saturday while Novice and Open Parli debate will be offered on Sunday (Simpson College will host both of the debate tournaments).  Entries for both days must be submitted on Speechwire by Tuesday, January 14, at 5 p.m.

If you are interested in either format of debate, it is helpful to let Spencer know the week prior to the tournament that you are sending teams, even if you do not know your exact entry. Spencer’s email is spencer.waugh@simpson.edu if you have questions about debate.  Direct question about the overall tournament or speech events to deano.pape@simpson.edu

We look forward to seeing you in January!

DEBATE: Simpson College will host debate both days. Open Public Forum will be offered on Saturday. Open and Novice divisions in NPDA will be offered Sunday. For this tournament, the definition of novice in Parli will be a student in his or her first two semesters of intercollegiate debate experience in any format. NPDA will have a central announcement of the topic with 20 minutes prep and walk. A 10 minute forfeit rule will be strictly enforced. We will offer 4 prelim rounds with appropriate outrounds. Debate Double Entry: Students competing in debate may only compete in debate on Saturday (Public Forum) or Sunday (Parli). However, students may compete in speech events on the day they are not competing in debate.

INDIVIDUAL SWEEPS: Students entered in at least four individual events will be eligible for an Individual Sweepstakes award.

AWARDS: The top 6 contestants in each event will advance to finals and receive awards, unless there are fewer than 12 entries in the event (or /e-breaking constraints require a different number of finalists). The top 3 individual sweeps entries will receive awards based on points from prelims and finals. Individual Events Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top 3 teams on each day of completion. Combined sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top 3 individual events teams at the conclusion of both tournaments. There will be top novice awards in each event.
