October 26, 2017

Greetings! Coaches Andrew Wolverton and Aaron Neblett cordially invite you to attend the Lafayette Jefferson Speech Tournament on Saturday, December 16, 2017.

Registration will only be accepted via SpeechWire. To ensure we have enough rooms and concessions, the deadline for registration is 6:00PM, Friday, December 8, 2017. Please be sure to include your email address so that we can send you a confirmation. Please contact Andrew Wolverton for any changes, including drops, after this deadline as soon as possible.

Our tournament will offer Broadcasting, Discussion, IX, USX, Impromptu, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Original Performance, Poetry, Prose, Program of Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Combined Memorized/Scripted Duo, and Improvisational Duo.

Specific event information is as follows:

Radio format:

o 1 – 5 minute news program (music Lead in/ Lead out/ Commercial on an insurance company.) NEWSCAST prepared by student
o 2 -  2 minute  contestant written editorial on the Congressional Tax Bill.
o 3- OTS 2minute prep / 2 minute speak
o Final- News Program Repeat

* DISCUSSION: Each 30-minute round will be run as a Socratic Seminar featuring a different text for discussion. Texts will be made available through the FILES FOR DOWNLOAD link on SpeechWire on or before 4:00PM on Monday, December 11, 2017. Discussion rounds will be staggered, so double-entered discussers should attend their other event first.

* EXTEMP: Extemp will draw first and third rounds. If there are a small number of entries in the two extemp events, the events may be combined for more competition.

* IMPROV DUO: Teams will be given a prompt and a TOTAL of FIVE MINUTES to prepare AND perform (i.e. 1-min prep, 4-min performance; 2-min prep, 3-min performance; etc.). Skits may include interaction between team members, including eye and physical contact. Props, however, may not be used. Please, have fun with this event!

* Informative Speaking and Program of Oral Interpretation! Please enter kids in these events as they will be NSDA District Events for most of us!

A school may have 50 entries total with no more than five entries in each event. If you have a large number of non-sweeps entries that exceeds the 50-entry cap, please communicate that clearly in an email prior to the registration deadline. Sincerest apologies, but there will be no pick-ups available this year.

Contestants may DOUBLE in all events. Contestants double at their own risk! If a contestant is late (within 10 minutes of the starting time for the next round) to a second event - no matter the reason, even if not at the fault of the contestant - the contestant will be marked last in that round. Coaches, please explain this to your contestants and judges. Again, CONTESTANTS DOUBLE AT THEIR OWN RISK!

Teams must provide one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof. For example, if you have 12 entries, you will need three judges. Any school failing to bring their assigned number of judges per their registration will not be eligible to earn a team trophy.

There will be three rounds, a next-in final round, and a final round in each event. The Top 5 students after prelims in each event will advance to the Final Round and ranks 6-10 will participate in a Next-in Final Round. Team trophies will be given to the top 10 teams. Ribbons will be awarded to the top 10 finalists in each event. Most rounds will run at 8:30AM, 10:00AM, 11:30AM, and 2:00PM.

Concessions will be available from 7:00AM to awards. Please help support JEFForensics by purchasing our concessions!

Registration will begin at 7:00AM.
** NEW BUS ROUTE **Buses may drop students off at the school entrances on Hiatt Drive off of 18th St. at door 16. This road no longer connects from 18th St. to 22nd.
