Dear Coach,

Please join us on Saturday, January 6, 2018 for Purdue University Northwest’s second annual Communication and Creative Arts Department High School Speech Tournament.

Overview:  We are offering all 14 IHSFA events, as well as POI and Informative.  You may enter up to 96 students (up to 6 students per event).  Students in all events (except discussion) may double (at their own risk…we will do our best to minimize the risks).

Registration:  We are accepting registrations on SpeechWire (www.speechwire.com) until, December 18, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. CST.  Afterwards, we will leave SpeechWire open only for drops and name changes of students and judges.  Any changes to your roster need to be made no later than Thursday, January 4, 2017.   Please be aware that your school’s judging obligation is based on your original entry. Final Registration will be from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. in the main entrance of the Student Union and Library Building, located North of the 173rd Street entrance.

Important:  If you have any drops the morning of the tournament, please call them in no later than 7:30 a.m. (CST). If you know of drops or name changes prior to Saturday morning email Erin Okamoto Protsman at okamoto@pnw.edu.  For "day of" drops, call Erin on her cell at (708) 908-0487.   There will not be any drops to pick up on the day of the tournament.

Student Drop off and Bus Parking:  Please drop students off at the main entrance of the Student Union Library Building.  Busses will park in the area designated “North 173rd parking” on the map (click link for details) http://www.pnw.edu/visitors-guide/wp-content/uploads/sites/41/pnw-calumet-campus-map.pdf

Judges:  Please bring one judge for every five entries (6 entries = 2 judges).  Please instruct judges to write clear, logical critiques so students understand their rankings.

There will be three rounds and a final in all events.  Every judge should sign up for a final round regardless of having students involved in the event.   From that pool, we will select panels for final rounds.  Some judges will be pre-assigned based on areas of expertise. We will need cooperation from all schools in order to provide 3 judges for each final round.  Please inform your students that they may be performing in front of you and/or judges associated with your school. This may be intimidating and better handled with forewarning.

Timers: We will not have timekeepers; judges should use stopwatches to time students.  If the judge does not have a stopwatch he/she should announce to all students that time will not be kept.

Events Information:

Discussion:  Topics will be posted on SpeechWire on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Duo:  Both duo partners may double according to the new IHSFA Rules.

Extemp:  Questions will come from November 1, 2017 through December 28, 2017 current events.  Draw rounds one and three - choice of round one or three topic for final.

Radio:  New IHSFA rules will apply.

First round:  radio program (5 min)

                  Second Round: Editorial (2 min)

Third Round: On the Spot (2 min)

Fourth Round: Radio Program (5 min)

Material for the radio program and editorial will be posted on SpeechWire on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Extemp draw and radio prep as well as all other rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m.  Round 1 of extemp and round 1 radio will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Awards:  We will award the top eight students in each event and the top five schools for sweepstakes. We hope to have awards by 4:00 p.m.

Food Service:  There will be food available for purchase in the cafeteria.  Additionally, there are snacks and beverage vending machines in the student lounge.

If you have any questions contact Erin Okamoto Protsman at (708) 908-0487 (cell) or email at okamoto@pnw.edu.  You may also contact Cindy Christ at (219) 989-2899 (christ4@pnw.edu).
