2017 Jr. Jay Pecking Order Middle School Speech Invitational

Creighton Preparatory School

7400 Western Ave.

Omaha, NE

The Creighton Preparatory High School Forensics Team invites you to join us for our 7th annual Jr. Jay Middle School Speech Invitational on Friday, April 7, 2017. We are very excited to be offering this tournament and hope that you can join us. Coaches, please read over the information provided on this site, and please e-mail us with any questions.

Parking: Creighton Prep is located on the northwest corner of 72nd and Western Ave. If your team is coming in from 72nd Street please completely pass the school and take the winding road off Western to the west entrance of the building. You will find the spacious main entrance to the Sullivan Center student commons and activities center has ample parking nearby. Do not continue north as that is the Leahy athletic complex and other activities are scheduled for that building. Once you enter the Sullivan Center you will see our registration table. There should be ample bus, van and auto parking the west parking lot. Please DO NOT park in the east lot overlooking the athletic field in that other activities will be utilizing those spaces.

Tournament Timing: Please keep in mind that this tournament takes place on a Friday after school. In past years, we have worked very hard to finish the tournament in a timely fashion. Thanks to our helpful parents, staff, coaches, and students, we have been fortunate enough to avoid delays. Due to the size of the tournament and our inability to run any finals (a time issue), we often face many ties. Breaking these ties takes time as we hope to never make a mistake. We pride ourselves on running an efficient, speedy, and educational tournament, and we ask for your patience during this time.

Judges: Please review the “tournament guidelines/format” sections for a complete explanation of judging requirements. Schools are expected to provide judges at this tournament.

Fees: You can review your fees by clicking on fees tab.

Schedule: We have included scheduling information. Please take a look at the schedule and familiarlize your students with it as we will be running a very tight tournament in order to get everyone home at a reasonable time. Rounds will run for an hour and fifteen minutes. Judges will be instructed to leave the round after the final competitor with enough time to pick up their next round’s ballots and arrive to their round on time. Therefore, we ask that competitors stay conscious of their time.

Entry Deadline: We will only accept registration through speechwire.com. The deadline to register is 5pm on Tuesday April 4th. After that  the speechwire.com site will be closed and all changes or questions must be sent to Coach Brown at rdanfordbrown@aol.com or at (402)333-4489.

NOTE: This deadline also includes your judges. Please do not simply put “judge 1”. Any judging slots not covered by this deadline will be considered part of your fees. We politely ask that no requests for extensions are made as we will immediately being slotting rounds at the deadline.

Entry limits: Due to space issues, we must limit entries in all events to 9 slots per school. However, we have enabled the WAIT LIST function in every event. Keep in mind that schools with larger entries may have multiple students in the same section. Through the years, in almost every wait-listed case, drops and other factors have enabled us to get most every wait-listed student in. Any additional entries beyond 9, need to be sent to rdanfordbrown@aol.com.

Event Rules

Extemporaneous Speaking: 30 minutes to prepare. 5 minutes maximum and no minimum. A 4”x6” note card may be used. Extemporaneous topics will include both domestic and international public policy issues. Students must present their topic to the judge and speak only on the topic chosen. Electronic files and sourcing of informations may be used in the extemp prep room in the Criss Auditorium. However, the files may be used for research only. Creighton Prep cannot be held responsible for any theft or damage to electronic equipment on tournament day.

Impromptu Speaking: 5 minutes to prepare. 7 minute maximum and no minimum. A 4”x6” note card may be used. Students must present the topic to their judge and speak only on the topic chosen.

Informative/Original Oratory: An 8 minute maximum original speech designed to inform or persuade the audience on any topic. Visual aids ARE allowed. Students may not use a powerpoint presentation because we will not be able to accommodate the technological needs to support it. We apologize for this inconvenience, but there is nothing we can do about it due to the size and time constraints of our tournament.

Dramatic (Prose) Interpretation: An 8 minute maximum presentation utilizing an original cutting of a selection of prose or drama that is serious in tone. Students may use a script but memorization is strongly encouraged.

Humorous (Prose) Interpretation: Same as dramatic, but with humorous content.

Poetry (Oral Interpretation): An 8 minute maximum presentation utilizing a poem or program of poems that may either be humorous or serious in tone. For a program, a common author or a common theme must unite it. Students MUST possess a script. This is a requirement in H.S. competition.

Declamation: Dramatic or Oratorical Declamation is the interpretation and presentation of non-original speech. Speeches may be historical, adapted from magazine articles, commencement address, or any other adaptations of non-original material, including forensics speeches from previous years. 8 minute maximum

Duet/DUO: A 10 minute maximum presentation utilizing an original cutting from a published play that may be humorous or serious in tone. Students MUST BE MEMORIZED. Students may use a table and two chairs. Students may interact with one another during the presentation (on-stage focus). We will provide chairs to students, but CANNOT PROVIDE TABLES as Prep does not have tables at the front of their classrooms. The best we can provide are classroom desks (which cannot be sat on top of or stood on). Students are more than welcome to bring their own folding tables etc. We apologize for this hassle but there is simply nothing we can do about it.

Awards

Every student taking 1st-3rd in their rounds will receive a round ribbon stapled to their ballot.

The top 10 competitors in each event will be recognized. The champion will receive a trophy and 2nd-10th will receive medals.

The top 5 teams will also be recognized ruing the award ceremony, with 1st-3rd receiving sweepstakes trophies.

Food: Given the timing of the tournament, we know your students will be hungry before dinner is served. Therefore, we will be offering a full concession stand as we have in the past years. This stand will be available to your students upon entering the tournament and then throughout the course of the tournament.

Post-deadline changes: We ask that you use speechwire.com for any changes up until the April 4thth, 5p.m. deadline. Following the deadline, please send an email to Coach Richard D. Brown with “Jr. Jay changes” in the subject line.

Questions: Please email us with any questions or concerns.
