Dear Indiana Middle School Speech Coaches:

We are pleased to announce that Clay Middle School will sponsor a speech tournament for Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grade students on Saturday DECEMBER 12, 2015.

We will abide by the IHSFA middle school event rules disseminated by Sarah McKenzie in September through the shared Google documents.

Time limits are changed to: Impromptu - total of 8 minutes prep & speak. Extemp = 7 min. maximum. Prose & Poetry are 4-7 minutes. Declamation, Humor, Drama, both Duos and Original are 4-10 minutes.

For every four students participating from your school, we ask you to provide one judge if at all possible. The judge may be a teacher or other adult or a varsity high school student who has participated in competitive speech events during his or her high school career.

Each participating school is invited to enter a team of up to thirty (30) students to be distributed over the various events. Only the top 20 individual scores will be considered when determining final team winners.

The scoring for the day will be based on three rounds of competition. Double ribbons will be awarded to the top twenty speakers in each event.  Team trophies will be awarded to the top 8 schools.  Clay will not take a trophy.

Students in discussion may not double. All other students double at their own risk. No student may participate in more than two events.

Discussion topics are as follows, with one topic per round:
1. Domestic Drones: Do they protect the general good
of the community or impede individual rights?
2. How would the use of body cameras impact law
enforcement?
3. How does an individual’s digital footprint affect
personal privacy?

Extemp draw NEW INSTRUCTIONS: 1.Host will provide an article (s) and questions. 2. Students will draw a three numbers. Pick an article. Can bring files. No internet use; but, may bring a laptop. Questions will be domestic in nature.

Lunch and Snacks will be available for students and concessions sales will fund ribbons, trophies and speechwire.

Please finalize your entries on Speechwire by Tuesday, December 8.
Final registration will be on December 12 starting at 7:45 am.  Our judges meeting will be at 8:30am and Prep for Broadcasting and Extemp will be at 9:00 am.  The first round will begin at 9:30 am.
