2016 Irish Brawl Invitational

NIETOC Bid Tournament

February 20, 2016

Dear Forensics Community,

You are cordially invited to the 1st Annual Irish Brawl Invitational held at Bishop McGuinness HS in Oklahoma City.  Don’t let the “1st Annual” discourage you.  I can assure you this isn’t my first rodeo; this isn’t even my 205th rodeo. I freaking love rodeos!  We are pleased to announce that we have been approved as a bid tournament for the 2016 NIETOC National Championship. Only five events will be offered: Original Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duet Acting, and Duo Interpretation.  All events will have three preliminary rounds before breaking to semis (quarters if necessary). Please refer to the Tournament Schedule tab for a more detailed look at the tournament structure (we will make every attempt to run the tournament on schedule and will accelerate when possible).

EVENT RULES:

All NSDA Rules Apply to OO, HI, DI, & DUO  (www.speechanddebate.org)

Duet Acting: Two students present a cutting from a single work of published literature containing two or more characters. Additional wording may be added only for the purpose of introduction, transition, and conclusion. The cutting must be presented without scenery, special lighting, costume and adjustment of clothing, etc. Each duet team is allowed two simple chairs, which may be used as props (but are not required). The maximum time is ten (10) minutes.

Grace Period:

All event time limits will include a “grace period” of no more than thirty (30) seconds.  Should a student go beyond the grace period, the student shall not be ranked 1st in the round.  There is no other prescribed penalty for going over the grace period.  The ranking is up to each individual judge’s discretion.

ENTRY LIMITATIONS:

  • In order to keep the tournament running on time, no individual student may enter more than 3 events. Since all preliminary rounds are being run simultaneously, it is the student's responsibility to make it to every round within the time block.  If they do not arrive by the time the round is completed, they will forfeit their speaking time and receive last place in that round.

JUDGE REQUIREMENTS:

Each school must provide one (1) judge for every six (6) entries or portion thereof.  Schools are expected to provide quality judges for their entries.  Schools my not completely “Buy Out” their judging obligations.  This tournament cannot happen if we do not have the judges.  So save yourself some money and help contribute to a great quality judging pool.  :)

Fees & Penalties:

Individual Events: $10.00

Duet Acting & Duo: $20.00

Missing Judge: $75.00

Drop Fee: $25.00

*Payment is due upon registration or proof of check request or a purchase order.  No student will be allowed to participate unless payment arrangements are made. Checks should be made out to BMCHS Speech & Debate.

DEADLINES:

All entries must be received no later than Saturday February 13, 2016 at 4pm.  After this time, any drop in entry numbers will be charged the original entry fee in addition to the $25.00 drop fee per event.

AWARDS:

All event finalists will receive medals with the tournament champion in each division receiving something cooler than a medal...YAY!

SWEEPSTAKES:

Sweepstakes Plaques will be awarded to the top 3 schools.  The calculation of sweepstakes points is as follows:

·      Semi-finalists: 3 pts.

·      Non-Placing Finalists: 5 pts.

·      3rd Place Finish: 10 pts.

·      2nd Place Finish: 15 pts.

·      1st Place Finish:  20 pts.

GENERAL TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES:

  1. No smoking on campus property. This is a State Law.
  2. Ballots will be distributed to judges in the hall directly outside of the library.  Coaches will be allowed to pick up completed ballots after tabulation for each round (ballot folders will be located in the judge’s lounge).  Please don’t “bug” the tab-room for ballots.
  3. A concession stand will be available in the commons.
  4. Postings for all rounds will be in the commons.
  5. An adult sponsor must be in attendance at all times.
  6. Oratories, as well as interpretation and duet selections, must be available upon request.  Failure to produce script(s) will result in disqualification.
  7. Coaches and Judge's hospitality will be in the teachers lounge down the north hall.
  8. Participating students must straighten up all competition rooms to their original condition.
  9. Anyone caught stealing or destroying property will be escorted with his or her team off campus and all team entries will be disqualified. Offending school’s administration will also be notified.
  10. We will accelerate the schedule when possible - it is NOT advisable that you leave campus. If you leave campus and miss a round – the round will be forfeited.

Mark your calendars now. We hope to see you there!
