Dear Coach and Speakers,

Welcome to the BEN DAVIS GIANT SPEAKERS Invitational Speech Tournament on February 14, 2015.  The meet will be held at Ben Davis High School located at 120 N Girls School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214. *In addition to the speech tournament, please be aware that Ben Davis will also be hosting the Girls Basketball Sectionals.

VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine day cards and candy will be available for students to purchase and give to that special speechie, just in case they forgot.  More information will be provided leading to the tournament.

 

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

All Registration will be done on www.speechwire.com. No emails, faxes or paper entries will be accepted. Entries must be received by Monday , February 9, 2015 by 5:00 PM.  Please make sure you included your email address with your entry so I can send you confirmation of your entry.  You will be allowed to make names changes and drops only after February 9^th.

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

This will be a varsity only tournament with three rounds of competition and a final round.  However, if an event is extremely large we will go to a semi-final round.  All events not meeting requiring a semi-final round will have a 4^th round of competition and then a final.  (The attempt here is to allow almost all of the students to get in as many rounds of competition as possible.)  We will notify you of the structure on the day of the tournament.

Entry Per Team: 45

Event Limitation: None. You can bring as many students in any event as long as you do not breach the team cap of 45 entries.

Non- Sweeps Team Allowed: NO

Pickup Drops Allowed: NO

 

TOURNAMENT RULES:

·         We will follow the rules established for IHFSA with the following exceptions:

o   Both duo partners may double using the same duo partner or a different one in scripted, memorize and op duos. Duos cannot compete using the same piece in more than one duo.

o   Students may enter up to 4 events at their own risk – no more than two events per flight

NOTE:  After 1^st the first flights (A&B) are completed, any student missing a round will be ranked last in the round by the office. We will not re-run any round because a student missed the round.

o   Students in discussion cannot double.

o   Extempers may double or triple in another extemp or impromptu only.  Those doubled in Impromptu MUST go to Impromptu last.

Congressional Debate – bills will be released the week of the tournament on February 9^th, 2015.

DISCUSSION

We will be using the Socratic Seminar format.  Artifacts will be posted on the Speechwire for download on February 9, 2015. No electronic devices will be allowed to be used or seen in the round.  Students who bring electronic devices to the round will be instructed to place those devices on a table away from the competition until the round is over.  *****New Discussion students may double in Flight A events only.

 

EXTEMP

Extemp will draw each round.

 

RADIO

Contestants will need to prepare the following: a two-minute news cast, commercial, and editorial.  Radio may not use any prepared outlines in On-The spot. ****NEW  Radio students can quadruple.  If a radio student doubles in Flight B, the student must go to radio 1st.
