Dear Coach and Speakers,

 The Ben Davis High School Speech Team is inviting you to our renewed Giants Invitational Speech Tournament January 11, 2014. The meet will be held at Ben Davis High School.  The tournament information is listed below, including deadlines and entry information, event rules, and judging information for the tournament.

This is a varsity competition, with three rounds and a final in all categories.

Restrictions: Entries are due by Monday, January 6, 2014 at 3:30 P.M. After that, only name changes and drops will be accepted. All registration will be done on Speechwire.com

     There is no entry limit. However, only the top 4 competitors in each event, per team up to 56 will count towards sweepstakes points.

There will be NO pick-up drops.

How to Enter: All Registration will be done on www.speechwire.com. No emails, faxes or paper entries will be accepted. Entries must be received by 3:30 Monday January 6, 2014. Please make sure you included your email address with your entry so I can send you confirmation of your entry.

Registration:

 7:00-8:00 am:    Registration

 8:00am:    Extemp Prep and Radio Round 1

 8:30am:     Round 1 for all other events.

Ballot Return: All judges should return their signed and properly scored ballots and completed critique sheets at the end of each round to the ballot table outside of the media center. Judges are expected to stay for the entire meet.

All events will follow IHSFA rules other than what has been stated.

Special Event Rules:

1. Doubling: There will be no doubling in Radio or Discussion. Only Extemp may double in impromptu. Those doubled in Impromptu MUST go to Impromptu last.
2. Duo can double in another duo under certain conditions…

1.    The duo partners MUST stay the same.

            2.    The scripts must be different.

Tripling will be allowed but, only by 4 students per team. No tripling in Radio or Discussion.

Extemp can double in another Extemp or Impromptu. Doubling and tripling is at risk of the student. Rounds will not be re-run for late speakers.

2. Extemp—Draw for Rounds 1 and 2 will begin at 8:00. Rounds 3 and 4 draw will begin at 11:00.

3. Broadcasting

RD. 1- News cast (2 minutes) no more than 3 days old—Student Written

RD 2-Commercial (1 Minute) advertising a beauty product for men or women--Student Written

RD 3-Editorial (2 minutes) “Should there be tougher laws in place to help end the mistreatment of animals?” ---Student Written

Final-On the Spot—(2 minute prep) will be from USA Today from the last 2 weeks.

There should be no leaving the building as food for students will be served in the cafeteria. Complimentary food for judges, coaches and bus drivers will be provided in the lounge. The judge, coaches and Bus Driver lounge will be in Le Gallery.

DISCUSSION:  This season, the IHSFA will be using a new Socratic Seminar format. Students will have 10 minutes to review information/take notes before the 50-minute discussion begins.

Judging:

Each school MUST one judge for every 5 contestants and every fraction thereof. Teams that do not bring enough judges may be disqualified from the tournament sweepstakes awards.

Awards: We will be awarding TOP 8 ribbons in each event. Top 10 team trophies will be awarded for sweepstakes. Sweepstakes points will be awarded on an 8, 7, 6… point scale.
