Carroll (Novice) Speech Meet 26 October 2013
Coaches, You and your team are invited to compete at the Carroll (Novice) Speech Meet to be held on October 26, 2013. There will not be a varsity division at this meet; it is for novice competitors only. Speech registrations will be through SpeechWire.com with all entries submitted by 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23rd. A novice competitor is being defined as a student with 74 or fewer NFL points.
REGISTRATION will take place from 7:30 – 8:45 a.m. Round 1 will begin at 9 a.m.
EVENTS OFFERED: Humor * Prose Drama * Poetry Declamation * Scripted Duo Original Oratory * Memorized Duo Original Performance * Broadcasting (may double)
In order to keep things relatively simple, IX, USX, Impromptu, and Discussion will not be offered at this meet. I would encourage students who would normally participate in those events to enter in Congress at the debate meet.
*Due to this being a novice-only meet, these events may be memorized or scripted. The main goal is to get the students involved in the events without the fear of failure due to not having a piece completely memorized yet.
FORMAT: This meet will have FIVE straight rounds without a final.
BROADCASTING: Round 1 = Commercial *prepared by student ahead of time *1 minute *must be a product pertaining to Halloween (be creative!!) “ 2 = Editorial *prepared by student ahead of time *2 minutes *topic must pertain to issue of state importance “ 3 = Newscast *prepared by student ahead of time *3 minutes *must be news within the past 7 days “ 4 = On-the-Spot *30-second prep time *1 minute “ 5 = On-the-Spot (same as above)
ENTRIES: No cap per event; no overall cap per team. As long as you can supply the judges, bring as many entries as possible.
DROPS: Drop as needed throughout the week. No additional entries can be made once the deadline is in effect due to the need to make food and room arrangements.
JUDGES: Each school must provide one judge for every five entries and fraction thereof (6 entries=2 judges). Varsity members may judge. Teams that do not bring enough judges may be disqualified from sweepstakes awards.
FOOD will be available for purchase in the cafeteria. Please help support the purchase of trophies and ribbons by buying food from the concession stand and by not bringing your own. Complimentary food for non-student judges, coaches, and bus drivers will be available in the judges’ lounge. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING FOR LUNCH OR ANY OTHER REASON.
AWARDS: Ribbons will be awarded to the top eight entries in each event. Trophies will be awarded to the top five teams.
QUESTIONS: Please send an email to philip.fretz@nacs.k12.in.us or call 260.413.0494 with any questions.
NOTE: Carroll will also be hosting a debate meet at the same time as the speech meet. The debate meet will be held in the high school while the speech meet will be held primarily at the freshman campus located at the west end of the building. Please check SpeechWire for info regarding the debate meet. If you have entries for the debate meet AND the novice-speech meet, your judges may not overlap. They will judge one meet or the other but not both and need to be entered as such.
AS YOU ARE LEAVING TO COME TO THE MEET, PLEASE CALL ME AT 260.413.0494 TO CONFIRM YOUR ENTRIES AND JUDGES. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE ANY NEEDED CHANGES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU.
We look forward to seeing you at the Carroll (Novice) Speech Meet.
