East Carteret High School

Speech & Debate Invitational
3263 Highway 70, Beaufort, NC  28516

Dear Coaches, Teams and Friends,

The East Carteret High School Debating Mariners want to invite you to the very first Billy Stanley memorial invitational to be held at East Carteret High School on October 22, 2013. We cordially invite you to the beautiful Crystal Coast of North Carolina for an exciting tournament to celebrate a beloved member of our community.

This tournament will feature Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu, Dramatic / Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Improvisational Duet Acting, Radio Announcing, Student Congress Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Spontaneous Argument.

Registration Deadline.  Tuesday, October 22nd at 3:00pm EST.     Drops may be made without penalty by 3:00pm, Tuesday, October 22nd.  Drops received after that deadline may incur a penalty fee of $10 per change towards expenses, and may be more for the cost of trophies if we have events that drastically change.

Non-Congress student s MAY TRIPLE ENTER in individual events and Spontaneous Argument!

New coaches, please only bring students who will compete, even if in Student Congress, for example.  You will find that a good time may be had by all if all the children are productively occupied.  All school rules and regulations will be enforced.  Students may observe others in their own respective rounds only

Congress. Legislation can be found in the ‘Files for Download’ tab at the top of this page.

Judging Requirements.    Each school must have available qualified judges based on the following requirements:  One judge available for every four individual events entries (not students), and one judge for every two debate teams or SPAR individuals.   Please instruct your judges that we are doing everything in our power to recruit judges from our community, but every school needs to have enough judges on hand, on-call, or else the cost of hiring someone may be incurred.

Awards.  Trophies will be given to the top six places in each IE/Debate event. Best Presiding Officer awards will also be given for each chamber in Congress.  No individual speaker awards for SPAR or PFD will be given, only the top six finishers in SPAR and 1st through 3rd for the two-person PFD teams . Sweepstakes trophies will be given for 1st through 3rd place. A special "small school" award will also be presented for the school that has the proportionately greatest wins according to percentage of at least five competitors.

Food.  We will have lunch and concessions for students to purchase.  No outside fast food is allowed.  Coaches and judges will be provided food.

Should you have any questions, please contact coach Julia Brown at (252) 286-8533 or email at julia1@stanfordalumni.org. Hope to see you here!
