This is a Middle School tournament in Illinois.

You are cordially invited to Deer Path Middle School’s 1st Annual Forensics Invitational, to be held Saturday, February 25th, at Deer Path Middle School West Campus in Lake Forest, Illinois (155 W Deerpath Rd. Lake Forest, IL 60045).


Logistics:
Students should be dropped off in front of the WEST side of DPM, which is the 1st circle east of Route 41. (registration will be in the lobby, students will proceed to the Haskins Center where alumni and captains will be available to help with last minute speeches and edits). Room assignments will be passed out at 11:30 in the Haskins Center. Students can board busses/be picked up in the back of the school, just off the cafeteria after the recognition ceremony.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO FOOD OR DRINK (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BOTTLED WATER) ALLOWED ANYWHERE BUT THE CAFETERIA!!!

2:30 pm – 3:00 pm        Improv Activity
3:00 pm – 3:30 pm        Recognition Ceremony

Student Congress
The Student Congress Bill Docket for February is posted on the Northern IL NJFL website: http://web.me.com/dpmdebate/NSMSD/Debate_Topics.html

Elections of Presiding Officers will occur at the beginning of Congress Session #1. Presiding Officers should be familiar with Parliamentary Procedure, using Seating Charts, and Speaker Recency. Experience Presiding is not a requirement; however, proper knowledge of how a chamber functions is essential to the success of this event!

Students will vote on the Legislation Order at the beginning of Congress Session #1. Proposed Orders may be pre-printed, or prepared on site. If there are no proposals, bills will be debated in the following order:

PW 1: Hate Crimes
PW 3: Lower Voting Age                
FA 1: Withdraw Troops                 NB: If you would like to participate in Congress, but
FA 2: Invade China                       are not entirely comfortable researching yet, or
Econ 1: College Tuition                not enough time, you can purchase research for
Econ 2: Tax Unhealthy Foods      $20.00 a packet (email Liz for details!)

Lincoln-Douglass
RESOLUTION: Resolved, It is morally permissible for victims to use deadly force as a deliberate response to repeated domestic violence.

Students will participate in 4 debate rounds in this event, 2 on the affirmative side, and 2 on the negative side.  The last 2 debates will be “power matched.”
 
Extemporaneous Exhibition Performances/Lunch
In between Congress Sessions #1 and #2, students who did not get a chance to speak on a bill during session can choose to give their speech for feedback at this time. Additionally, if a student would like a challenge, they can elect to do a shortened version of the NJFL Extemporaneous Speaking Event!

Pizza and drinks will be sold during dinner – please bring $5-7 in cash if you are interested. Please provide an approximate number that will be eating in registration email.


Improv Activity
As the students are waiting for the recognition ceremony to begin, please join us for a fun Improv activity!  No experience required!
