Skeffington Memorial Speech Tournament
General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Indiana. View manager contact information Dear Coach, You are invited to Chesterton’s Skeffington Memorial Tournament on Saturday, January 15, 2011. Registration will be on SpeechWire (www.speechwire.com). We will offer all 14 events at both the varsity and novice levels. You may enter 40 sweepstakes entries and up to 20 non-sweepstakes (those will be designated as a “B” team on speechwire). You may enter up to 5 per event in each division. Students in all events except discussion may double at their own risk (We’ll try to minimize the risks.) You may also triple enter up to four students. We will have three rounds and a final in all events. If the size of an event warrants it, a semi-final round may be held; the office will make this call the day of the tournament. Also, if numbers warrant it, varsity and novice may be combined, but separate awards will be given. Please bring one judge for every five entries (6 entries = 2 judges). Judges will be asked to write clear, logical critiques for the students. Students need to understand the reason for their rank. We will not have timekeepers; judges should use stopwatches to time students. If the judge does not have a stopwatch he/she should announce to all students that time will not be kept. Discussion will use the “Education Reform” topic – sub-topics 1, 2, 4, and 5 Extemp questions will come from Time, Newsweek, Economist, and the Christian Science Monitor. Students will draw rounds 1 and 3 and have their choice of topics for final round. Radio students should bring a three-minute newscast, which includes a commercial for a national product. We will supply “breaking news” and information to write a one-minute editorial. We will provide the on-the-spot as well. Registration is on SpeechWire, but you will not be able to register your entries until after January 2nd. Entries are due by Monday, January 10th at 5:00 CST. Final registration will be from 7:00 – 7:45 on the 15th. Extemp draw and all rounds will begin at 8:00. Round 1 of extemp will be at 8:30. We will have food service in the cafeteria. Please remain in the building. If you have any questions contact me at robert.kelly@duneland.k12.in.us Important: Please call in any drops you have by 7:30 (CST) Saturday morning.
