General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Indiana. View manager contact information Canterbury High School Novice Speech Tournament January 7, 2012
You are cordially invited to Canterbury High School for a novice only speech tournament. Your preregistration is needed by Tuesday Jan. 3, at 2:30 p.m. Unfortunately, due to the size of our building, entries are limited, and those received after the limit is met, will be returned with our regrets.
Events offered: We will offer all IHSFA speech events and each will compete in four straight rounds with no final. Extemporaneous topics will be taken from Time and Newsweek. Students will draw for rounds one and three. Discussion will use the current Immigration Topic using the subtopics in the following order: A, B, C, D for the four rounds of discussion. Radio contestants need to bring a two minute newscast, a one minute editorial in response to the following question: “Would a ‘flat tax’ be fair to all?”, and a one minute commercial advertising a nationally recognized cell phone company. The on-the-spot fourth round will be taken from that week’s USA Today. All other events will follow IHSFA rules.
Doubling: Students may not double in Discussion. Extemp students may only double in Impromptu or Original Oratory. Extemp students should check into the extemp prep room, let the prep room person know they are doubled, and then go and speak in Impromptu or OO first. Radio contestants may double but should report to radio first. Both duo partners may double, but not in another duo. Everyone doubles at their own risk; no rounds will be repeated.
Entries: Please no more than 26 entries per school. Drops will not be picked up. Please no more than 4 entries per event. It may be possible that in some events students from the same school may have to compete with someone from their own school. We will try to avoid this if at all possible. We will have to limit the total entries to around 250 students. Allen county schools are welcome to include 7th and 8th grade middle school contestants in all categories. They will be competing WITH the novice students.
Judges: Please bring one judge for every four entries or fraction thereof (5 entries = 2 judges). Students who have 150 NFL points may judge; please indicate student judges on your entry. A school can be disqualified from sweepstakes awards if it fails to bring the required number of judges.
Food: Concessions will be available for purchase. Please do not leave the building!
Awards: Team trophies will be given to the top five teams. Ribbons for each event will be given to the top seven students.
Online Pre-registration: Pre-registration will be done via speechwire.com. Each school will receive its individual registration code via email, and you will receive instructions on how to register through that website. No other forms of registration will be accepted.
Final Registration: Registration will be in front of the main office from 7 to 7:30 a.m. Announcements will be held in the cafeteria at 7:40 for all contestants and judges. Extemp check-in and draw will be at 7:50. First round for all other events will begin at 8:00.
