Inaugural Bethany Christian High School Novice Festival Speech Tournament
5 November 2011
Your team is invited to be a part of history: the first-ever full-blown Saturday speech tournament to be held at Bethany Christian High School in Goshen, Indiana. Please read the following information carefully and contact me at your earliest convenience if you should have questions.
REGISTRATION 7.00-7.45 A.M. (E.S.T.)
FIRST ROUND 8.00 a.m. (E.S.T.)
AWARDS half an hour after finals conclude; hopefully 2:30 p.m.
All events will run four straight rounds. Ribbons will go to the top eight in each event.
Food will be available throughout the day in the building. Please don’t leave the building before the end of the day.
WHAT IS A NOVICE? A first-year competitor or one with fewer than 50 NFL points.
Discussion: TOPIC AREA 2: Technology. Sub topic A for first round, B for second round, and so on. General topic won't be used.
Radio: Bring a two-minute news broadcast, a one minute editorial on an appropriate and newsworthy topic, and a one-minute commercial on a product or service of the competitor’s choosing. Final round will be on-the-spot. There will be no doubling for students taking part in radio.
Extemps: Topics taken from September - present Time, Newsweek, Huffington Post, and “Fox and Friends.” Draw for first and third rounds; students must use the third-round topic for the fourth round. Students will be allowed to use note cards for the first and third rounds.
Congress: Discuss IHSFA bills 1, 8, 11, and 14.
Entries: Limit of four per event and 40 per team. Because of the small size of our school building, total entries are limited to 250.
Doubling: At the contestant's own risk. Extempers can double only in impromptu. May not double in both duos; all others may double with the exceptions of radio, discussion and Congress.
Drops: NO PICKED-UP DROPS. Sorry. That's the way of the world these days.
Judges: One for every five entries or fraction thereof (six entries = two judges). Experienced students with at least 150 NFL points AND junior class ranking may judge. Coaches: Please instruct your students on proper judging etiquette and demeanor.
Please register via SpeechWire by no later than 3:30 p.m. Wednesday 2 November.
