Dear Speech Coach,
Moline High School invites you to embark on a journey to the Western side of the great state of Illinois....(insert drumroll & fanfare here). We are hosting the 1st annual MHS Encore! Speech Tournament on December 17, 2011. We are hoping that we get things right the first time around, so please come and partake in the festivities. We are modeling our tournament after the great things that many of you all have done with yours; therefore, many of the details below should feel familiar to you all! Hope to see you all on the 17th!
STRUCTURE: Two flighted preliminary rounds (one being double-judged), and varsity and novice finals. Round 1A competition will begin at 8:30; Extemp and Radio are B events, so prep will begin at 9:00. Please plan on arriving no later than 7:30 AM.
ENTRY: A maximum of 3 entries per event. Please contact me if your team wishes to compete with more than that. Please register online using SpeechWire.
JUDGES: Each team is expected to bring one qualified judge for every six entries. If you wish to bring extra entries (numbers permitting), you will be asked to bring extra judges as well. If you contact me quickly, hired judges may be available at a cost of $75 per judge.
FEES: 1 – 28 entries: $100
29 – 42 entries: $150

EVENTS: All 14 IHSA events.
AWARDS: All individual finalists (varsity and novice) and the top 3 teams will receive recognition, along with a donation made to the charity of their choice.
REGISTRATION: Begins at 7:00 AM.
EXT/IMP TOPICS: Each team should submit 5 Impromptu topics and 5 Extemp questions via SpeechWire.
ENTRY DEADLINE: Wednesday, December 7, 2011 by 4:00PM (a little earlier, for my sake, since this is our first tournament) :)
FINAL POSTING ON SPEECHWIRE: Friday, December 16 by 12:00 PM
RULES: IHSA rules will apply, with the following notes:
Impromptu – Students will speak on a topic of their choice from a selection of three topics. Students will be given 2 minutes to prep and a 6 minute speaking time limit.
Radio – Prep once for prelims and prep again for finals.
Extemp – Prep once for prelims and prep again for finals.
Time – Only in Radio as per IHSA rules.
SPECIAL DIRECTIONS: When driving on Avenue of the Cities, you'll notice an electronic marquis for MHS. The high school is set back, down the driveway from the marquis. Know that you will pass Roosevelt Elementary on your right (and possibly even the alternative high school/ROE if you are driving East on Avenue of the Cities).
