The Third Annual Chanhassen Speech Tournament is on Saturday, January 21st, 2012!

Bookend your season with us!

Dear Speech Coaches,

On behalf of the Chanhassen Speech Team, I invite you to the Chanhassen Speech Tournament. It promises to be an exciting day filled with learning opportunities for your speakers. I encourage you to think about the opportunity to “book-end” your season at Chanhassen High School – proud host of the 2012 MSHSL State Speech Tournaments. Why not get your kids familiar with Chanhassen High School before they come here for the State Tournament in April.

NEW THIS YEAR!
Chanhassen is a bid tournament for both National Individual Events Tournament of Champions and Extemp. Speaking Tournament of Champions Tournaments. Students who earn top honors in humor, drama, duo, original oratory, and extemp. speaking will earn a bid to the corresponding tournament.

We know that this is truly an "Early Bird" tournament and for that reason, we plan on offering a well-manned "How To" table that will help your novice competitors feel at ease and possibly provide review for your varsity competitors. The table will be a great place for novice competitors to check in if they are confused about the speech schedule, how to fill out a critique sheet, where the rooms are located, or any other random speech questions they might have. We run a unique tournament offering a novice/varsity split but only having varsity finals, providing a great opportunity for novice competitors to attend VARSITY final rounds to learn from the best.

We plan on having breakfast (egg breakfast sandwiches and pastries) and lunch concessions available for students throughout the day, as well as FREE breakfast and lunch for coaches and judges in the judges lounge. We promise to have EXCELLENT food and beverage options.

We are excited to be using speechwire.com to schedule and tab the tournament this year. If you have any questions about how to maneuver the site, please email rothert@district112.org

We are excited that you are considering attending our tournament.

Thanks

Tournament Information:

Registration Deadline:

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 (Initial Team Entry Deadline)

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 at 5:00pm (drops and adds – all drops after this point will not result in a change of statement)

Entry Limits:

There are no team or category entry limits

Entry Fees:

$7 per entry

Checks payable to Chanhassen High School

Entry Changes:

Entry changes (drops or adds) can be made on the speechwire.com tournament site up until the end of registration. We can also accommodate drops and adds at the registration table the morning of the tournament. We will be site scheduling all rounds of competition in order to make sure rounds are equal and fair. For this reason, registration must be completed promptly by 8:00 AM or a phone call to 612-817-8436 must be made to report your team drops.

Novice/Varsity Split:

Because this tournament is so early in the season, we will be splitting novice and varsity competitors in all categories where we have enough entries to do so (at least 2 sections of both novice and varsity competitors). We will not be offering novice final rounds, but novice competitors can still earn trophies and team sweepstakes points based on their preliminary rounds. It would be our hope that novice competitors would go to the varsity final rounds for their categories to watch their eloquence.

Double Entering/Triple Entering:

Double entering is allowed in ALL categories, including discussion. Discussion will have start 15 minutes early to accommodate those double entries (discussants should not double enter in a draw category). Draw category double entries are allowed, but students should not double enter in 2 draw categories. Triple entry will be allowed as long as the student is not in more than 1 draw category. Students double and triple enter at their own risk!!

Judging Requirements:

Teams need to bring 1 judge for every 7 entries or fraction thereof. A small number of judges will be available for hire at $85 for the day. Please email Travis Rother if you need to hire a judge by Monday, January, 16th.

Judging Finals:

We ask that ALL judges be available to judge final rounds. If you have any coaches at the tournament who are not judging, please consider making them available for final rounds, it will make our lives much easier. We would like to offer panels of 5 judges for varsity finals if we can make it work. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Tournament Format:

Novice: Three preliminary rounds

Varsity: Three preliminary rounds and a final

Minnesota State High School League Event Info:

Extemp. Reading Prose Stories 1-10 (students can repeat a cutting from their preliminary rounds in finals)

Extamp. Reading Poems 1-20 (students cannot repeat a question from their preliminary rounds in finals)

Storytelling Stories 1-10 (students can repeat a story from their preliminary rounds in finals)

Discussion Topics III

NFL Rules:

At this tournament, National Forensics League (NFL) rules apply to NFL categories - Extemp Speaking, Humorous, Duo Interp., Serious Drama, Serious Prose, Serious Poetry, and Original Oratory. For non-NFL categories, MSHSL rules will apply. This includes the 10 minute time limits in the interp. categories and O.O.

Team Sweepstakes:

Team trophies will be available for the top 3 teams. We will also have a team SMALL SCHOOL championship trophy available for teams with UNDER 30 entries! Novice ranks will have a strong influence in team's sweepstakes in order to encourage teams to continue to develop their novice competitors. Also, we will be awarding a Novice Championship trophy to the school with the highest cumulative point total by novice competitors.

Directions to Chanhassen High School:

Chanhassen High School is located at the intersection of Audubon Rd and Lyman Blvd in Chanhassen, Minnesota. There is easy access to Lyman Blvd. by going north on Powers Blvd off of Highway 212. The address is 2200 Lyman Blvd.

"Going Green":

We will try to do our best to be environmentally friendly at our tournament. For this reason, we will be using half-sheet critiques that offer judges space on the front and back to write their feedback. We will also be posting schedules on the walls of the commons for students to see the rounds that they are speaking in and their speaking order. Results will be posted online immediately following the tournament on the speechwire.com tournament site, rather than printing results packets.
