Poland Seminary High School Individual Events, Student Congress, Public Forum, and Lincoln-Douglas Debate Saturday, December 10, 2011

Dear Forensics Coaches:

The Poland Seminary High School Speech & Debate Team cordially invites you to attend our 2nd Annual Poland Kiwanis Speech & Debate Tournament on December 10, 2011.

Individual Events: We will offer a total of three(3) preliminary rounds of competition. Please limit IE to six (6) entries per category.   (Your 5th and 6th competitors should be listed as JV.)  Indicate your desired “wish list” if you would like to bring more than the allotted amount in each category, and we will do our best to accommodate your additional requests if room allows.
Adds will be accepted on December 6th in all events if space is available. Please note we have been able to accomodate extra entries in all events in the past.
Public Forum Debate:
We will offer four (4) preliminary rounds of competition. Please follow the December NFL topic. Please limit entries to six (6) teams. We will accommodate more if room allows. 
Lincoln-Douglas Debate:
We will offer four (4) preliminary rounds of competition. Please follow the November/December NFL topic. Please limit entries to six (6) debaters. We will accommodate more if room allows. 

Please register debate judges on Speechwire as well.  I WILL BE utilizing Speechwire to schedule for debates.

Extemp:
The prep room will be in the High School Library/Media Center.  Topics will be from the past 90 days of the standard news magazines used.  If you have any suggestions for topics, send them to me by December 1st.  Please note for useage of laptops that there is minimal power outlets available in the media center and the outlets that the media lab computers are connected are NOT ALLOWED to be unplugged for competitor useage.

Impromptu:
We will use the official OHSSL format.  See OHSSL Constitution.

Student Congress:
We WILL be hosting student congress at the tournament and registration for this event is unlimited. PA schools that are attending; please send legislation by November 1st.  We will be utilizing the DECEMBER docket from the OHSSL for legislation. (It will then be distributed to all the schools that week.  Legislation will not be accepted the day of the tournament.)

Registration Fees:$3.50 per entry (PF & DUO count as 2 entries). Make checks payable to Poland High School. (Fees may be paid at the time of registration)

Judge Requirements:
IE:   One (1) judge for every five (5) IE entries (a Duo team counts as one entry)
Public Forum/LD/2P: One (1) judge for every 1-2 teams/debaters; two (2) judges for 3-4 teams/debaters
Congress: One (1) scorer or parli for every 7 entries

In I.E., a judge who just graduated from high school last year may NOT judge the event in which he/she competed.  A parent or other close family relative should NOT judge the event in which the current competitor competes.  (not applicable in L/D or PF Debate) PLEASE NOTE ANY JUDGE PROBLEMS OF THIS NATURE WHEN YOU REGISTER.  Do NOT drop judges even though you may be forced to drop contestants. A dropped judge on the day of the tournament will cost you $30.00.  The judge drop fee will be enforced this year.

Lunch & Snacks: Snack items will be available for purchase at reasonable prices on Saturday in all schools Lunch will be served in the High School cafeteria.  The Youngstown District has issued a rule stating that no constestants are allowed to leave the premises for food  to bring back to the tournament.

Awards: Trophies/Plaques will be awarded to the top six placements in all events. School trophies will be presented to the top three overall sweepstakes champions.

Sweepstakes: 
Sweepstake will be decided by the scores of your best ten contestants overall.  In I.E., a 1=3pts.; a 2=3pts.; a 3=1pt. In L/D, 2P, and P/F, a win=2.25pts. (0 pts. for a loss)  In Student Congress you will scores for your best three speeches with a score of 6 =3pts. ; 5= 2pts.; 4= 1 pt. for a max total of 9 points. 

Because of the size of the tournament and our space limitations, we must use three other buildings in addition to the high school.  Thus, WE ARE ASKING YOU TO DROP OFF YOUR L/D & P/F DEBATERS AND JUDGES BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. Student Congress will take place at the high school.

All other events will register at the high school, and then, those competitors and judges who will be competing and judging in Union Elementary will be bussed there.  We will provide a shuttle bus to transport all competitors and judges in other buildings back to the high school for lunch and awards after the rounds are completed.

Time Schedule:
Registration: 8:00 – 8:30 AM (Computer Lab #9)
Extemp Draw: 8:45 AM (Library)
Opening Assembly: 8:45 – 9:15 AM for all contestants (PHS Auditorium)
Judges Meeting: 8:30 AM (PHS Cafeteria)
Awards: 4:00 PM (PHS Auditorium)

Registration Deadline: ALL teams are to register at www.speechwire.com
ALL contestants should be registered by December 8th, 2011 at 3:00 pm. 
ALL judges must be registered by Friday, December 9th at 5:00 pm.****

Tab Room: IE / Debate Tab will be for the district committee, or by invite only.
