I am a lay judge, so I evaluate the round the way an average, informed person would rather than through a highly technical debate lens. I value clarity and persuasion over speed and jargon, so please speak at a conversational pace and explain your arguments in simple, direct language. If I cannot understand an argument, I cannot vote on it. I expect debaters to clearly connect their points to the resolution and explain why their impacts matter more than their opponent’s, using comparison (such as magnitude, probability, and timeframe). Evidence is important, but explanation is more persuasive than simply reading cards. Organization and clear signposting help me follow the debate. I am less likely to vote on highly technical theory or trick-based arguments unless they are thoroughly explained. Ultimately, I will vote for the debater who best supports their case, effectively responds to their opponent, and clearly tells me why they should win.
