CULVER ACADEMIES SPEECH

Dear Coaches:

You are invited to the Culver Academies Colonel William F. Northam Memorial Speech Invitational on Saturday, January 26 at The Culver Academies.  Registration is due on MONDAY, JANUARY 21 AT 6PM (EASTERN TIME).  We are experimenting with Speechwire this year, so we need the extra time to become familiar with it.  So please ensure that your entry is as accurate as possible.

REGISTRATION will begin at 7:30am EST in the Academies Dining Hall with a judges meeting occurring at 8:30 and Round 1 starting at 9AM that morning.  Directions are included below so that you are familiar with our campus.  We are on EST and not Chicago time.

ROUNDS:  All events will go 4 straight rounds.  There will be no finals.  We hope to start awards somewhere around 3:30.

DIVISIONS:  Novice=First year Speech competitor.  Varsity=Everyone else.

EVENTS:  We will offer the 14 IHSFA sectional events AND IMPROV DUO.

DISCUSSION: Discussion will be using Socratic Seminar format. Students will be given all necessary material for the discussion, via their coaches, on Monday, January 21 after the artifacts, etc, have been emailed to coaches who have registered for the tournament.

RADIO: Contestants need to bring a five-minute news program to be used for both rounds 1 and 4 that includes a music intro and outro as well as a commercial.  Choices for music: Alternative—Young the Giant, Foster the People, Bastille; Classic Rock--- Yes, Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple; Country—Little Big Town, Florida-Georgia Line, Carrie Underwood. The commercial topic for news program round will be any national fast food franchise. Round two will be a two-minute ORIGINAL (written by the student based on research and opinion) editorial about the government shutdown. Round three will be 2-minute on the spot with 1-minute prep at the tournament.

IMPROV DUO: Students will have a maximum of 5 minutes to prep and act out various scene prompts.  Competitors will have 5 minutes TOTAL to prepare and perform an improvisational duo with a given topic. Two chairs provided. Competitors MAY touch/make eye contact.

EXTEMP will draw first and third rounds and may use either topic for the final.  Topics will come from Speechgeek, Champcraft or National Federation Topics.

Team entries are limited to a total of 40, with a maximum of 4 in each event, per division (4 novice and 4 varsity entries in prose is legal).  Extra non-sweeps competitors can be entered.  If you have a LARGE number of non-sweeps, please contact Mitch Barnes immediately before you register to discuss these numbers and possible implications.  Competitors may double at their own risk.  All events may double with the exception of Discussion.  Duo competitors, including O.P. duos, may double in another duo with the same partner, but not with the same material.  Extempers may not double in the opposite extemp event (USX’ers can’t double in I.X.)  We reserve the right to combine events or divisions if small numbers make this appropriate, but they will be divided back for awards.

.JUDGES:  Bring 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof.  CRITIQUES WILL BE GIVEN.  Please train and bring judges who are willing to write clear, educational rationale for ranks or suggestions for improvement.  Competitors need insightful critiques early in the season.  A blank critique sheet or a “Good job…7th place” is NOT an acceptable critique.  Those schools that do not bring the correct number of judges will not be able to compete for sweepstakes.

FOOD:  Don’t plan on leaving the campus.  Food will be available throughout the day at the Lay Student Center, located below the Dining Hall.  If your team wishes to eat lunch in our Dining Hall, there is a $6.00 all-you-can-eat charge per person.  There is a $5.00 all-you-can-eat charge for breakfast.  Food for lunch can also be purchased in The Shack, located below the Dining Hall.  Teams are welcome to bring their own food as well.  There will be a judges lounge available in the morning with doughnuts, coffee, etc.

Please inform your judges that they will need to bring $5.00 (or $11.00) to eat at our Dining Hall.  Being a boarding school, we regret that we don’t have a booster or parents club that can provide lunch for judges.  But they can have seconds and thirds with our AYCE Dining Hall.

NO SMOKING: Our buildings and campus are smoke-free areas.

AWARDS: Trophy plaques will be given to the top 10 teams. Ribbons will be given to the top eight in each event.  Culver Academies will be competing for a team trophy.  Varsity and novice will use the 8, 7, 6….scoring

We hope to see you on January 26, 2019!   Please contact us if you have any questions/concerns!
