Tournament Information

Entries & Fees

IE will be hosted here on Speechwire; Lincoln-Douglas will be hosted on Tabroom at illiniswing.tabroom.com.  We’ll send out the links closer to the tournament.

Competitors are allowed to enter up to 3 IE events per flight.  Semifinals will be held for any IE event with 45 or more entries. Entries are due at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, January 29th.  Drops will be taken until Wednesday, January 30th at 5:00 PM. Drop fees will be assessed after that.

We at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are a student run team, so we are happy to talk about fee waivers for any student run team as well!

Please make out all checks to the Speech and Debate Team at the University of Illinois.

Entry Fees

IE slots: $8.00

Uncovered IE slots: $10.00 in addition to the base cost

LD entries: $35.00

Uncovered LD entries: $75.00 in addition to the base cost

Drop Fees

IE slots dropped after the deadline: $10.00

IE slots dropped at registration: $15.00

IE judges dropped after the deadline: $25.00 plus the cost of hiring a judge

LD drops after the deadline: $30.00

LD judges dropped after the deadline: $50.00 plus the cost of hiring a judge

LD judges dropped at registration: $75.00

Each IE judge will cover 6 entries.  Each LD judge will cover 2 debaters.  Any judges dropped after the Wednesday 5pm deadline will be assessed a drop fee as listed above.

As it is difficult to find qualified LD judges, we ask that schools do everything possible to cover all of their LD entries.  Additionally, we will waive the fees for one LD entry for every LD judge you bring above your commitment.

The tournament will be using AFA rules for IE and NFA rules for LD.  There will be limited Wifi access available for Extemp, but we cannot guarantee its reliability.  Impromptu prompts will be given in the form of a quotation.

IE awards will be given to all finalists in each event.  The top non-advancing novice in each event will also be recognized.  A novice for our tournament will be defined as anyone in their first year of collegiate speech.

Lincoln-Douglas will break to either quarterfinals or semifinals, depending on field size.  Awards will be given to all semifinalists and finalists, as well as the top 5 speakers.  The top non-advancing novice debater will also be recognized.

Students competing in at least 4 IE events in at least 2 genres will be eligible for Individual Sweepstakes awards.  The top 3 schools overall will receive Team Sweepstakes awards.

ICE Information (will be updated as information changes)

Our program is committed to inclusiveness and welcomes students and coaches from all identities and social roles.  In light of ongoing harassment and discrimination, and the current administration's most recent action to repeal DACA, our programs stand in solidarity with, and will continue to offer a safe, educational space for our most vulnerable members.  The University of Illinois has joined with 698 other Universities to show official support for DACA and to call for its continuation and expansion.  The University of Illinois has its own campus police and has not declared itself a sanctuary campus, but U of I police do not have a history of cooperating with ICE that we are aware of.

Urbana is a sanctuary city; Champaign is not.  Urbana police will generally not help the government investigate immigration status unless there is a court order to do so.  With that said, ICE has been sporadically active in both Urbana and Champaign over the past year, and we have reason to believe that former Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh has cooperated with ICE in the past.  The new sheriff, Dustin Heuerman, has expressed an intent not to cooperate with ICE, but this does not guarantee perfect safety.

The State of Illinois recently signed into law the TRUST Act which enacted the nation’s strongest state-level due process protections for immigrants who fear any interaction with local police could result in deportation.  We have found the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights to be a useful resource.

Lincoln-Douglas will occur during Flight B for the most part, with the exception of Round 5 on Sunday morning, which will occur before IE competition starts.  While LD debaters may enter into Flight A events, we strongly recommend that LD debaters enter into not more than one IE event in Flight B.  Please bear in mind that judges will not hold up rounds if cross-entering in Flight B causes a debater to be late.
