The Hawken School Speech & Debate team cordially invites you and your team to attend the Larry H. Banks Memorial Invitational on Saturday, November 10th! We have named this event in honor of our team’s founder, Larry H. Banks and hope to put on a wonderful tournament in his honor. This will be the Second Annual Larry H. Banks Memorial Invitational!
This is a varsity and BQS tournament in the Cleveland District.

Tournament Location:

Hawken School Gates Mills Campus (Hawken Upper School)
12465 County Line Rd.
Chesterland, OH 44026
*Please make sure to use this address – you don’t want to end up at Hawken’s Lyndhurst Campus!*

**Please refer to the parking maps for information on where to park, where to send your bus, etc. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS COULD LEAD TO YOUR BUS GETTING STUCK AND NO ONE WANTS THAT! One bus did get stuck last year, so please be certain to caution your bus driver.**

Tournament Events

Individual Events: We will offer a total of four (4) rounds of competition. You may enter up to four (4) competitors in each category. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows. We have worked with our tech department to ensure that Wi-Fi will be available for extempers in the prep room. More details on this will be given on the day of the tournament. If you have students interested in double-entering, please email us with specific information (names and both events). We are concerned about space. For now, please register the student in only one event. We will try to accommodate double-entered students (except in extemp) if space allows. We will notify you in early November.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: We will offer five (5) rounds of competition. We will be using the November/December NSDA Topic You may enter up to four (4) competitors in LD. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.

Policy Debate: We will offer three (3) rounds of competition. We will be using the 2018-2019 NSDA Topic (Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.). You may enter up to four (4) teams in 2P. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.

Public Forum Debate: We will offer five (5) rounds of competition. We will be using the November NSDA Topic  You may enter up to four (4) teams in PF. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows. PLEASE STRESS WITH YOUR STUDENTS THAT NO MAVERICKS ARE ALLOWED BY OHIO BQS RULES. We nearly had a problem last year with one student who had to leave before round 5 and the partner was about to debate as a maverick, but we stopped the round from happening.

Student Congress: We will be utilizing the November docket assigned for November 10th from the OSDA for legislation. (It will also be available to all the schools on Speechwire.  Legislation will not be accepted the day of the tournament). We will have 3 preliminary sessions of Congress (approximately 1hr 30mins each). We will be scoring based on judge preference. We will also be using direct questioning. You may enter up to six (6) competitors in Congress. If you have additional entries beyond 6, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.

Schedule
7:30-8:00 Registration/Check-in.  We would really like to start Round 1 by 8:15.

Full schedule available on Speechwire.

Awards - 4:00pm.

Deadlines:
Deadline to add/drop entries: Wednesday, November 7th @ 5:00pm.
Deadline to add/edit judges: Thursday, November 8th @ 5:00 p.m.
*ENTRY FEES LOCK AT 5:00pm on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7th – ANY DROPS AFTER THAT POINT WILL INCUR THE ENTRY FEE ASSOCIATED WITH THAT ENTRY*

Registration Fees:
$10.00 per entry (PF,CX & DUO count as 2 entries). This fee includes lunch for the competitors.  If you are breaking out the registration fees and charging your team members separately for lunch, the breakdown is $4.00 registration for EACH competitor then $6.00 for lunch.  All competitors will be charged for lunch (see specific note below).  Lunch for judges and coaches is complimentary. Checks should be made payable to Hawken School (Fees may be paid at the time of registration). Our lunch is all you can eat (IN THE DINING HALL - you can't take anything "to go" - for a flat price.) Last year, we tried to take advance lunch orders, collect payments for lunch at registration, count out lunch tickets per team, then collect lunch tickets at the door of the dining hall. Honestly, it is a lot easier for us to just include lunch in the registration fee and not have to worry about any lunch tickets. You are certainly welcome to collect the $6 per student lunch fees from each of your students (which is what we did last year) and pay us the lunch fee separately in cash. There are no places nearby to get lunch, we will definitely have vegan options and a variety of food, so we assume everyone will be eating lunch. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns with this. Thanks!

Judge Requirements:
IE:  One (1) judge for every five (5) IE entries (a Duo team counts as one entry)
PF/LD/CX: One (1) judge for every 2 debaters/teams.
Congress: One (1) scorer or parliamentarian for each school that has Congress entries.

HIRED JUDGING INFORMATION:
We will have some judges available for hire if you are unable to cover your judging commitment. ALL HIRED JUDGING REQUESTS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE TOURNAMENT PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL – Please email us to confirm that we still have judges available!
Fees are assessed by each uncovered entry:
$10 per uncovered CON entry
$10 per uncovered IE entry
$25 per uncovered LD/PF/CX entry

Lunch & Snacks:
Our Hawken Dining Service will be providing lunch for all students at a rate of $6, and this is included in the entry fee. Since there are no other food options in proximity to our campus, we will be serving lunch for everyone who attends.  Adult meals for judges and coaches will be complimentary.

Snack items (continental breakfast items, beverages, and deserts and snacks after lunch) will be available for purchase at our Café in Stirn Hall. Please do not bring your own food or plan to leave campus for lunch or snacks – we are running a very ambitious schedule and YOU WILL MISS ROUNDS IF YOU LEAVE CAMPUS.

**We would ask that ALL snacks be consumed ONLY in areas marked by the tournament. We have VERY STRICT FOOD RULES in Stirn Hall and CANNOT allow food throughout the building. Food consumption should be limited to areas with a hard surface, the AC Lobby, and the White House Dining Area.**

Awards:
Our tournament trophies are being created in the Hawken Fab Lab by Hawken students! We can’t wait to show off these custom creations.

Trophies will be awarded to the top six placements in all events.

School sweepstakes will be presented based on the top competitor in each event for each school. There will be a team sweepstakes trophy for the top 6 teams.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Susan McGraw at susan.mcgraw@hawken.edu or Bob Shurtz at rhshurtz@gmail.com

We look forward to hosting you on Saturday, November 10th!

See you soon,
Bob Shurtz, Susan McGraw, Becca Marks, and the Entire Hawken School Speech & Debate Team
