Marshall Speech Spectacular!

JANUARY 25-26, 2019, MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL, MARSHALL, MN

 

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  FRIDAY, JANUARY 18 AT 4:00

The Marshall Tiger Speech Team invites your team to the 18th Annual Marshall Speech Spectacular! We call our tournament "Spectacular" because it is truly like no other tournament around. The "Spectacular" is a two-day experience that offers your team separate Novice and Varsity divisions, 4 preliminary rounds, quarter finals, semi finals, and finals! We welcome all teams of all sizes and experience levels! Every year we host some of the best competition you'll find including many teams from out of state plus a diverse array of teams from every corner of Minnesota. We'd love to have your team join us this season!

 

REGISTRATION:

Registration Deadline is Friday, January 18 at 4:00.  Changes can be made to a team's entry without cost until Wednesday, January 23 at 8am.  After this time, final invoices are printed.  Drops are allowed but NOT refunded and adds are no longer allowed. 

 

FORMAT:

  • Separate Varsity and Novice Divisions
  • 4 Prelim Rounds (3 Friday, 1 Saturday) for both Divisions
  • Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, Finals for Varsity Events 
  • Semi-Finals, Finals for Novice Events 

NOVICE DIVISION

  • At this tournament, a Novice is defined as a competitor who is new to speech or new to their event.
  • Know that a Varsity quarterfinalist earns more team sweepstakes points than a Novice finalist.

SCHEDULE:

  • Rounds begin Friday at 1:35pm and awards conclude on Saturday at about 5:00pm.  More detailed schedule below!

 

FEES:

  • $7 per entry, $14 per duo, no entry limits
  • $25 shuttle bus fee per team
  • Optional - Friday Spaghetti Supper with dessert. $12 per student.  RSVP required on Speechwire by Tuesday 8am before the tournament.  See more info below.

 

JUDGES:

  • Each team is asked to bring 1 judge for every 6 entries.
  • Uncovered entries cost $30 each
  • Large teams bringing over 60 entries:  your team meets its judge obligation with 10 judges.  All entries over 60 are judge-free!

 

DOUBLE-ENTERING

  • Double-entering is allowed in all events.  Triple-entering is NOT allowed.

 

TWO BUILDINGS

  • Two venues are used for the tournament - Marshall High School and Southwest Minnesota State University.  MHS is the headquarters for the tournament where registration, tab, awards, and all out-rounds are held.  Only prelims of designated events will be held at SMSU.  A continuous shuttle bus will be provided to bring students to and from SMSU and will also provide continuous service to those who are double entered in both buildings.  The shuttle trip is short (just across the highway) and students have not had trouble being double entered in both buildings in the past.  Teams do not need to take their students to SMSU.  All competitors competing at SMSU will be able to get there themeselves from MHS via the provided shuttle bus.

 

FRIDAY SUPPER

  • An optional supper will be offered on Friday evening for $12 each after Round 3 to all teams that have RSVP'd on this website. Each team that has RSVP'd will get 1 free meal ticket for the head coach plus an additional free coach ticket for every 6 purchased.  Please DO NOT include these free tickets in the RSVP.  Payment should be submitted at tournament registration on Friday.   The supper menu is spaghetti with meat sauce (or vegetarian), bread, lettuce salad, drink, and dessert.  For teams that would prefer to leave the school to eat, a map of local restaurants will be provided.

 

LODGING:

  • For hotels in Marshall:  www.visitmarshallmn.com
  • If Marshall hotels do not meet your needs, Prairie's Edge Casino Hotel in Granite Falls (25 minutes from Marshall) or Canby Inn and Suites (30 minutes from Marshall) or Redwood Valley Lodge in Redwood Falls (35 minutes from Marshall) are good options.

 

CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS:

  • Our tournament offers all MSHSL categegories plus POI.

MSHSL INFORMATION:

  • Extemp Reading: Prose 1-10, Poems 1 and 2.  (Readers start fresh draw at quarters)
  • Discussion tasks will come from Point 1.
  • Storytelling: 1-10.  (Stortellers start fresh draw at quarters).

 

TIME LIMITS:

  • All draw events (Extemp Speaking, Extemp Reading, and Storytelling) are 7 minutes.  All other events are 10 minutes.  Draw intervals are every 8 minutes.
  • NOTICE:  At this tournament, all varsity division events have a 30 second grace period.  Judges will be asked to time and will be given the following instructions:  VARSITY DIVISION competitors who exceed the 30 second grace period cannot get the 1 in the round.  Judges will be asked to be lenient with Novices on time limits.

 

DIRECTIONS:

  • MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL is located at 400 Tiger Dr. Marshall, MN 56258 at the intersection of Highways 19 and 23.  You can enter MHS on Friday through the gym doors or the main entrance in the center of the building by the flagpole.  Please don't enter the building before 11:30 on Friday.
