FEBRUARY FRENZY VARSITY SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNEY
@ Lee's Summit HS
9-10 Februrary 2018

ATTENTION: REGARDING ENTRIES AND THE WAITLIST

All entries are put onto a waitlist. This is just how I have the program set up for my tournament. I will be approving entries as they are put in, based on the following criteria:

1. Attempt to give each school a minimum of 2 entries per event.
2. Prioritize those entries that were put in before the initial deadline.
3. Balance the schedules of events to not have byes or overly small sections.
4. Space available with rooms and judges.

Big Questions:   Saturday, Feb 10
Rd 1 @ 9:30 am (or thereabouts)
Rd 2 @ 10:30 am (or thereabouts)
Rd 3 @ 11:30 am (or thereabouts, or potentially after Rd 4 of Debate)

Note 1: We're trying to work in BIG QUESTIONS, because we're broke and need money. It will depend on entries and judges. So go ahead and plan on bringing your District BQ slots (or even your non-district BQ's!) and we'll see if we can squeeze them in somewhere. We will aim to have the 3 rounds of BQD Saturday morning during IE sems/finals. This would only impact your IE folks that are in finals, everyone else could do BQD! In fact, you could even offer BQD to your students as a consolation prize if they get eliminated from their main event. If we don't get enough entries or I'm not able to secure enough judges, we'll have to cancel the event. Keep your fingers crossed! And we won't say no to a coach who signs up to judge BQD. :)

Note 2: We have a small squad and we're busy recruiting JUDGES. However, if you'd like a lot of entries (districts is right around the corner), it might be a good time to call up the ole' school judge that you'll use for NSDA and MSHSAA and ask if they'd be available for Feb 9-10. It would be good practice for them. If we have to schedule a coach to judge, we will attempt to limit the number of rounds to two maximum.

Note 3: Against our coaching staff's personal desire to go home at a decent hour on Saturday, we've decided to have out-rounds of debate. For those of you entering policy, we'd like to entertain the idea of breaking straight to semifinals. We'll play it by ear based on number of entries and how everyone feels on Tourney Weekend.

  • Hospitality will be located in THE LECTURE HALL (Just up from the Cafeteria).
  • Concessions will be located in the Cafeteria. Cash only.
  • Tab will be located in the LMC.

WE ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT LIVE POSTINGS THIS YEAR! IT'S A NEW FEATURE WITH SPEECHWIRE AND WE ARE HAPPY TO TEST IT!
Students and coaches should be able to sign up for live postings (we are not currently planning on live posting results as of this moment). This will make copying schedules less mandatory and allow students and coaches to see their schedules as soon as they are available. If we decide that this is too cumbersome or just not worth the time/energy, we won't do it. But I'd love for this to be an option at tourneys so we're going to try for it if we can.

Parking and Arrivals

IF YOU ARRIVE BEFORE 2:35 PM ON FRIDAY, DO NOT PARK ON THE WEST SIDE OF CAMPUS, AND DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT HOGGING UP THE BUS LANE!

Before 2:35 pm on Friday, busses may congegrate way down yonder by the soccer fields on the northeast quadrant of campus, and students may walk all the way around the school to the cafeteria area.
After 2:35 pm on Friday, busses may park in the bus lane and drop students off directly at the cafeteria.

SATURDAY, WE HAVE THE ACT GOING ON IN BUILDING B DURING MORNING HOURS.
Busses should NOT park on the west side of campus. You may drop off in the bus lane, but please park on the south or east side of campus until the ACT clears the building, which is about 12:30 pm.

STUDENT CONGRESS AGENDA & INFO

WE WILL NOT MAKE AN ARBITRARY AGENDA FOR THE CONGRESS SESSIONS. Folks, we're at the end of the competitive season, so there should be no reason why we can't have great debate at this point on all these pieces of legislation. If there is no debate, the session will most likely end early and students will not get speeches in. Furthermore, judges will most likely get angry due to lack of debate and question why they volunteered their time for this. So please, IMPRESS UPON YOUR STUDENTS TO MAKE CONGRESS THE NOTWEWORTHY EVENT THAT IT CAN BE.

HOUSE INFO:
The House will operate as most Congress Debates do at most tourneys: Prelim Session (IE Rounds 1 and 2), followed by a Supersession that will occur during Semifinals and Finals of IEs.

SENATE INFO:
The Senate will operate as one chamber, and each school should limit their entries to two max. These entries should be your best Congressional debaters, the ones that will represent you at the upcoming District tournament. The Senate will meet as one chamber during IE Rounds 1 and 2, as well as during IE Finals, giving students the equivalent of three rounds of competition.
