Washington High School Orange and Black Oral Interpretation Tournament

Friday, October 20, 2017

Oral Interpretation Coaches:

We are pleased to invite you to attend the fourth annual Orange and Black Tournament at Sioux Falls Washington on Friday, October 20.  We will be hosting the tournament during the day, as there is no school for Sioux Falls students.  The hope is to have everyone on the road by 6pm at the latest.  Please see schedule below for your planning and travel itineraries.

We will be holding four rounds of competition followed by awards.  In addition to our varsity events, we will offer a novice division in all categories.  In the event that novice entries so not allow separate rounds in a particular category, we will combine novice and varsity, but will still separate results for the purpose of awards.  It is our goal to offer all competitors a positive experience.

Events and entries

Schools may have an unlimited number of entries in each of our seven divisions:  Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, Duo Interp, Storytelling, Non-Original Oratory, Poetry, and Reader’s Theatre.   We will allow a triple entry if the third entry is Reader’s Theatre.  Rounds will be staggered to keep the tournament running smoothly. Please only triple enter your students if you can assure they can balance making it to all of their rounds on time, as we will not re-hear or hold over any rounds for students who do not make it to their assigned rooms in a timely manner.

Registration

I will be using SpeechWire to manage the tournament entries.  Please go to speechwire.com, locate The Orange and Black Oral Interp event link, login, and proceed with registration.

Please have your finalized entries in by 6pm on Tuesday, October 19 via SpeechWire.   Any changes after that will need to be emailed to me directly at michelle.mcintyre@k12.sd.us.  You may also call or text me with questions or last minute changes on the day of the event at 605-359-0524.  I will be at school by 7AM that morning for you to report any drops, adds, or changes with competitors or judges, so that we can be ready for your students when you arrive.

South Dakota High School Activity Association rules will govern this contest.

Judges

Each school must provide one judge for every 5 students or fraction thereof.  Please be sure to cover your judging commitments, as I do not have a large pool of judges available for hire.  The fee for any hired judges will be $65.  College students are acceptable as judges.  CLEAN JUDGES ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATED so that we can cover our judging needs more effectively.

Please be sure to review relevant judging criteria with your judges so they are well-equipped to provide positive, quality feedback that helps our competitors grow!!  Please also share that food and refreshments will be provided and that we expect them to stay available through the final (fourth) round.

Awards

Students in the top six of each event will receive awards. Sweepstakes awards will be given to the top school in each class (AA, A, and B).
