Sunflower Swing Information

Dates: October 21-22, 2017

Location: Bethel College
300 East 27th Street

North Newton, KS

Events and Format: You may participate in one or both tournaments. An open division of all eleven AFA events in two flights will be offered. No student may enter more than three events per flight. AFA rules will be followed in all events.

FLIGHT A

After Dinner Speaking, Communication Analysis, Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Poetry Interpretation, Program of Oral Interpretation

FLIGHT B

Duo Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Prose Interpretation

Entry Fees and Judges: Entry fees will be $8.00 per entry per tournament. Each school should provide one judge for every six entries. Uncovered entries will cost $10.00 per entry in one tournament (or $20.00 per swing entry) in addition to the entry fee. We would rather have your judges than your dollars! All judges must be available to judge one round beyond the round in which their school's students are eliminated.

Entry Deadlines: Entries must be entered via SpeechWire no later than 5 p.m., Monday, October 17. Entry fees will be assessed at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, October 19, after which time no refunds will be given. Any entries dropped after 12:00 noon on October 19 will be assessed the original fee plus a $10.00 per entry nuisance fee. Any judges dropped after 12:00 noon on October 19 will be assessed a $50.00 per judge nuisance fee. Any judges dropped at registration will be assessed a $100.00 per judge nuisance fee. No additional entries will be accepted after the deadline. Entry changes can be made on SpeechWire, or if changes can no longer be made online, please contact Mallory by phone or e-mail.

Tabulation: Darren Epping, Assistant Director of Individual Events at Kansas State University, will be in charge of the tab room throughout the weekend. To maintain tabulation integrity, the tournament directors will ensure that representatives from no fewer than two different schools are present in the official tab room while tabulation of preliminary and final rounds takes place.

Team points will be awarded according to students’ placements in final rounds (10 points for first place, 8 points for second place, 6 points for third place, 4 points for fourth place, 2 points for fifth place, and 1 point for sixth place or lower). Students who wish to enter Individual Sweepstakes must compete in four events. Individual sweepstakes points will mirror the system for determining team sweepstakes points.

Ties will be broken in the following manner: Speaker points will be used to determine who advances to a final round. Ties in both preliminary rank and rate mean that all tied contestants will advance so long as the events are tied for fifth seed or better. Ties in final rounds will be broken by judge’s preference followed by speaker points. Ties in team points and individual sweepstakes will be broken on number of finals followed by number of firsts, seconds, thirds, etc earned in final rounds.

“No Shows”: If a student is a "no show" to a round (defined as not signed in and not appearing by the time the round has expired), they will be dropped from the tournament. Sometimes there are legitimate problems that prevent a student from reaching a round. In those cases the student’s coach should report the problem to the ballot table and/or a tournament director immediately. Remind your students to sign in to rounds when they are double- or triple-entered so that judges know they are coming. This policy’s primary objectives are (1) to prevent the tournament from falling behind due to judges waiting for competitors who never arrive and (2) to avoid giving unfair advantage to students in significantly smaller sections due to “no shows.” Please discuss this policy and our reasons for it with your students.

Awards: Bethel and K-State will present sweepstakes awards to the top three schools, awards to the top six finishers in each Individual Event, and awards to the top three individuals participating in three or more Individual Events. A Sunflower Swing sweepstakes award will be presented to the top school at both tournaments combined.

Food Allergies: Breakfast items will be provided for all competitors, judges, and coaches at the tournament. Please contact Mallory if anyone traveling with your squad has a food allergy that needs to be addressed prior to the introduction of these items to common areas.

Adaptation for Physically Challenged Competitors: If anyone traveling with your squad has a physical disability or has concerns about accessibility or adaptations, please contact Mallory.
