2018 Broward Middle School Championship | Western High School | Saturday May 5, 2018

The Speech and Debate team from Western High School invite your team to the 2018 Broward Middle School Championship on Saturday May 5, 2018. Please read the following information carefully before entering students into the tournament.

EVENTS OFFERED: Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Student Congress, Policy Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Declamation Speaking, Impromptu and Storytelling.

ENTRY LIMITS: 10 in each event; 15 in Congress  

ENTRY FEE: $15.00 per student –includes lunch - payable to Wildcat Debate Parents. Entry fee is charged from the time you enter a student on the web site.

JUDGE OBLIGATIONS: 1 judge for every 5 IE (including Congress), and 1 judge for every 2 debaters or fraction thereof, but you cannot mix Policy, PFD, or LD judges. Please make certain you have the correct number of debate judge. Schools with more than 35 IE competitors will need only 7 IE judges. High School student judges may be used if the student is a 10-12 grader and has 150 NSDA points or more.

HIRED JUDGES: Western High School will offer limited judges for hire at $40.00 per judge. However, schools should intend on fulfilling their judging obligations for all students.

REGISTRATION:  Enter online at www.speechwire.com under “Broward Middle School Championship”

ENTRY DEADLINE: Entries will be accepted through Tuesday May 1, 2018.  Changes and drops may be made until Friday, May 4, 2018 at 8:00 a.m., but you will be charged the entry fee for any student originally entered.  The web site will be closed Tuesday night. Drops after Tuesday night and before Friday at 8:00 a.m. will be charged the entry fee.  After 8:00 a.m. on Friday, drops will incur $10.00 in addition to the entry fee.   Please e-mail me any changes/drops, judge names after Wednesday evening.  Drops on the day of tournament or “discovered” during the actual tournament will result in the entry fee forfeiture plus a $20.00 penalty. 

LUNCH: Western High School Debate will provide lunches, which are included in the entry fee.  For the tournament, you do NOT have to order lunch for students. However, you must order for all judges, student judges, adults and/or coaches. Please remember to order lunch for your judges/coaches separately; cost for lunch for judges/coaches is $7.00. Judge and coach lunches will be automatically added if you choose to ignore this item. 

FINAL REGISTRATION:  Registration begins promptly at 7:15 a.m. and will close at 7:45 a.m. in the Western High School Cafeteria. Please be prompt.

SCHEDULE: All events will feature 5 rounds of competition (4 in Policy) and 3 sessions in Student Congress. Rounds will begin at 8:00 a.m. with Extemp Prep and we will run 3 rounds of competition prior to lunch at 12:30 p.m. and the final 2 rounds and 1 session (Congress) after lunch. We anticipate awards to begin at 5:00 p.m. Please inform students and parents accordingly.

AWARDS: This year we will feature awards for the top 6 students in all events and top 3 students in each Congress chamber. We will also feature an overall middle school championship sweepstakes award for the top school at the tournament.

FORFEIT RULES:  All rounds will be subject to the judge-arrival-plus-ten-minutes forfeit rule for students.

EVENT RULES: All competitive events will follow the NSDA Middle School Competitive Event Rules. For your reference, a copy of these rules and regulations have been placed on Speechwire.

Student CongressLegislation is posted on Speech wire. Please download the legislation and distribute to your students competing in Student Congress. Students should prepare all bills as agendas will be set in chambers. Chambers will be released at the tournament.
