IU East Speech Tournament

Dear Coaches--
Indiana University East would like to cordially invite you to our annual speech tournament to be held on Saturday, December 3, at 2325 Chester Blvd, Richmond, IN 47374. Registration, ballot drop and pick up, judges' lounge, and student commons area are all in Whitewater Hall which will serve as the tournament home base. Students will be competing in other hall, so they may wish to bring walking shoes and appropriate coats for moving between buildings. Susie Delay (sdelay@ncweb.me) from New Castle and Ronnie Swango (rswango@rcs.k12.in.us)from Richmond will be managing the tournament.
We will offer all IHSFA speech events. Extemp prep will start at 8 with all rounds beginning at 8:30. We will go 4 straight rounds, no final.
Students may double at their own risk in all events except for discussion. No tripling allowed.
Entries are due on Monday, November 28 by 5 p.m.
Schools may enter a maximum of 30 entries with 5 in each event. If our maximum tournament size has not been reached by the deadline, we may allow already-registered schools to enter additional competitors (up to 40, only if room is available).
Schools must provide 1 judge per 5 entries. (1-5 entries= 1 judge; 6-10 etnries= 2 judges; 11-15=3; 16-20=4; 21-25=5; 26-30=6)
Discussion topics will be released on the Monday prior to the tournament.
Radio contestants need to bring the following materials with them:
Round 1--5 minute news program with a commercial for First Merchant's Bank, a music lead-in and lead-out (country format--Billy Currington, Old Dominion, Miranda Lambert; pop
format--Justin Timberlake, Sia, Bruno Mars; or alternative rock--Kings of Leon, Green Day, Blink-182); and current news
Round 2--2 minutes editorial on the rich/poor gap in the United States
Round 3--on-the-spot will be provided day of meet--2 minutes prep; two minutes speak
Round 4--reuse 5-minute program from round 1
Extemp will draw rounds 1 and 3 only. Round 2 will use round 1 topic and round 4 will use round 3 topic.
Food will be available. More details to follow.
Awards--Ribbons will be given to the top ten in each event and trophies to the top ten schools. IU East scholarships will also be awarded to speakers winning an event.
