The Randolph High School Speech & Debate Team is pleased to invite you to the 27th Annual Randolph Fall Classic Speech & Debate Tournament to be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016. We will be offering competition in varsity, junior varsity and novice Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum debate, as well as Congressional Debate. There will be eleven individual event (IE) categories including Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Improvisational Acting, Declamation, Program Oral Interpretation, and for the first time, Informative Speaking.

There will be four double-flighted preliminary rounds in Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum debate with breaks to finals only if time permits.  LD & PF will have three divisions: novice, JV, and varsity. Please register your students for the appropriate division based on NJSDL rules. There will be three preliminary rounds in all individual event categories with breaks to finals; in categories with sufficient numbers, we may break to semifinals, time permitting. Finally, there will be two sessions of Congressional Debate, with the possibility of a final round depending on the number of entries. The usual complement of awards will be given to the top 6 competitors in all categories. Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top 5 teams competing.

Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. and first round will begin promptly at 9:15 a.m. A complete tournament schedule will be available on speechwire.com. Please refer to the following page for administrative details.

We will, as usual, conduct a brief overview session for judges at approximately 8:45am. While we strive to alleviate confusion and answer all questions, we cannot spend the time to fully train judges. If you have untrained judges, please consider attending our evening judge training session at RHS, 7pm on November 7. We offer this training annually and free of charge to benefit the speech and debate community at large.

All registration must be completed via speechwire.com. If you have never used this site before or would like assistance, please contact our team email (randolphforensics@gmail.com) (subject heading:  “RHS Tournament Registration 2016”). Registration must be completed by 3:00pm on Friday, November 18. Nuisance fees will begin after 8:00pm on Wednesday, November 16.

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES:

§  Only students who are sponsored by a degree-granting institution that they attend are permitted to compete. No individual or “lone wolf” entries are permitted.

§  Please mark all speech novices as such in your registration. If there are enough novices in each category, we may be able to hold novice honors rounds concurrent with the final rounds, judged by experienced Randolph team members. At the very least, we will give an award to the top non-advancing novice in each category that does not proceed to a novice honors round.

§  All Congress bills must be emailed to Peter Quinn (pquinn@rtnj.org) by Monday, November 14. A legislation packet will be made available shortly thereafter.

§  We will be using the NSDA November PF topic and the November/December LD topic.

§  Speechwire will accept up to six (6) entries per school per category. We reserve the right to place any further entries on a waitlist, subject to room and judge availability. Coaches will receive notifications if we are able to clear the waitlist.

We look forward to seeing you in November! Until then, we wish you the very best start to the 2016-17 season.

§  What’s New:

·       There is a slight increase in the judge fee for uncovered entries. This is due to a growing number of entries left uncovered in previous years, especially in debate. Please make every effort to bring as many judges as possible to the tournament. A healthy judge pool is much more desirable to us than piles of judge fees.

·       We will enforce an additional $90 fee for any judge drops without replacement after 8pm the night before the tournament. If you have last-minute name or event changes for judges, PLEASE do not drop them. Simply edit the name(s) and/or event(s) they are covering.

·       Due to issues at last year’s tournament, we will also enforce a late withdrawal fee. This fee is triggered if a school drops its entire entry without warning immediately before the tournament. Please see the invitation for more details.

·       Informative Speaking has been added as a new event, and Program Oral Interpretation is back from last year.

·       Due to low turnout last year, Prose Reading and Poetry Reading have been combined into Oral Interpretation. Each round will alternate Prose or Poetry.

·       Per NSDA policy and district insurance directives, only degree-granting schools are permitted to compete at the tournament.

·       We pulled together a last-minute charity drive for Doctors Without Borders last year after the attacks in Paris the week before. We were so pleased with the generosity of our speech & debate community, we looked for other ways to give back charitably this year. To that end, and because we are a Thanksgiving tournament, we will be holding a fundraising drive for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. The FoodBank serves the needs of our fellow New Jerseyans, and has a four-star rating from Charity Navigator. We will have a donation kiosk set up in the Commons, and the team with the largest contribution amount will receive a special award during our awards ceremony! If possible we ask teams to come with just a little extra spending money for the less fortunate among us.
