Use of Technology

Use of laptops and tablets will be allowed during all debate events provided this equipment is not used to retrieve the internet and with the understanding that technology cannot disrupt the flow of the debate process.  Additionally, we discourage the use of laptops while formally speaking in rounds.  Other technology notes:

  • With the exception of use as timers in rounds, cell phones of any type are prohibited in ALL events including Extemp.
  • We will not guarantee the safe storage of any personal item including computers and will offer no guarantee of electronic hookups.
  • Use of technology in violation of the rules may result in disqualification.

Students entered in Extemp will be allowed to use computers in the Extemp Prep Room under the following guidelines:

  • Students may use laptop computers they provide (1 computer: 1 student; no sharing) or the more traditional boxes/tubs/squad current events files.
  • NO use of internet in extemp prep.
  • Printers will NOT be available.  Extempers may bring their own printers if they also provide appropriate extension cords (if outlets are available in the Extemp Draw Room), and their own paper, AND printing does not interfere with other student preparation to speak.
  • Technology may be checked at any time by the extemp draw room monitor.
  • Use of technology in violation of the rules (as provided by the National Speech and Debate Association) may result in disqualification.

Double Entries

Contestants may enter up to two speech events.  Because events will be patterned, contestants may enter one event in each pattern, one in Pattern A and one in Pattern B, but they may not double enter within the same pattern.  Coaches, please remind double entered contestants that they should carefully read postings to know where to be and what time to be there.  There is no doubling in Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, or Congress.

Only high school graduates will be allowed to judge at the Guilford County Challenge. Please provide judges who you know to be competent and experienced, or, in the case that this is their first time judging, judges that you have personally trained.  First and second year college students are invited to judge, but let us know, so we can flag them to judge only novices.  A limited number of LD judges are available for hire.  Please do your best to meet your quota.

Drops

Drops made after 5:00 pm on WEDNESDAY, December 7th will result in forfeiture of the registration fee.  After Wednesday, please continue to make drops on Speechwire.  Any Congress drops should also be sent to Mr. Pittman at Keith.Pittman@asheville.k12.nc.us and Mr. Dejesa at ddejesa@greenville.k12.sc.us

Registration Changes

Please help us finalize registration as smoothly as possible.  Additions after registration closes on Tuesday are unlikely unless space allows, so please take care of your registration as soon as possible.  If you have additional needs, please contact us at your earliest convenience.  In that these additional entries do not overwhelm an event and you can provide the required number of judges needed, every effort will be made to meet reasonable requests.  Last year, we ran out of space, so get registered soon!

Final Saturday Registration

Calling ahead will without a doubt help us get the tournament underway.  While traveling, contact Scott Bennett at (336) 707-0966 (texting is preferable) to confirm registration and make any necessary changes.  You may begin calling as early as 7:00 am.  Leave a message if voice mail kicks in unless texting.  Then, upon arrival, coaches may simply drop off their checks at the registration table and pick up their packets.  Registration will take place in the media center from 8:00 to 9:00 AM.
